When the Sheridan Hoops Freeroll passed 700 entries on Friday morning, there was no question about a new record. By mid-afternoon there were 950 teams, and a late flurry pushed the final number to 1,068. “PrincessDuckling” overcame those 1,067-1 odds to win the $100 first prize, edging “edwind3” (who won 60 bucks) by just three-quarters of a point. Congratulations!
We hope you are having fun every Friday, but now that the Freeroll is so popular, your odds are many times better in $2 leagues. For example, the $1,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool pays $200 for first, $125 for second, $90 for third and the top 50 win cash. It’s limited to the first 550 entries, pays out 330% more money and the entry fee is just $2 higher than free.
My picks were generally solid, but Greivis Vasquez — who I’d expected to run wild against a slumping Jeremy Lin — had a terrible night, so I finished 187th in the Freeroll and failed to cash in eight $2 leagues. That still leaves me $44 ahead of the $100 weekly bankroll.

The Salary Cap contest requires both skill and luck to win; picking the ‘right’ players is a start, but you also need to avoid the unexpected, like foul trouble, injuries and illnesses. With ten NBA games tonight, there are countless possible lineups. The chart attempts to narrow things down in three different price ranges.
Breaking news during the day can lead to re-evaluating players; you can make unlimited roster changes until the 7:00 EST deadline.
F1 LaMarcus Aldridge (POR-F) $17,923
F2 Matt Barnes (LAC-F) $9,784
G1 Kyrie Irving (CLE-G) $16,257
G2 Tony Parker (SA-G) $15,936
C1 Amir Johnson (TOR-C) $12,976
C2 JaVale McGee (DEN-C) $7,793
U1 DeMar DeRozan (TOR-G) $10,157
U2 Wilson Chandler (DEN-F) $9,101
It would make just as much sense to key on Carmelo Anthony as LaMarcus Aldridge; LMA is a hunch because Blake Griffin may be slightly hobbled by a sore ankle. I’m loaded at guard and hoping my centers turn out to be bargains. This is just one lineup; in leagues where you can enter multiple teams, diversity has paid off for me several times.
It’s always free to open a DraftStreet account. Don’t wait for next week’s Freeroll. There are free leagues every day that will help you learn the rules, and contests ranging from $2 entry fees up to hundreds of dollars.
The Fantasy Spin, published by 9:00 every morning, previews all of tonight’s games in more detail and reviews what happened on Friday, when Kobe, Kyrie and Korver were hot.
