- On Oct. 20, 2012, Curry suffered his first sprain in the preseason against the Portland Trail Blazers on a freak play, when guard Wesley Matthews accidentally ran through Curry’s foot while attempting to steal the ball from him.
- On Nov. 19, 2012, he rolled his ankle after landing on a Mavericks’ player’s foot on a drive to the basket. He stayed in that game and actually had one of the finest games of his career.
- On Jan. 16, 2013, he suffered a mild ankle sprain in shootaround, forcing him to miss the next two games against the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.
It’s unfortunate, because every time we hear “sprained ankle” next to Curry’s name, we think of the twice surgically-repaired ankle that has defined him as a player up until this season. The situation is very sensitive, and no one hates hearing about his ankle woes more than Curry himself.
Unlike past seasons, however, all the injuries this season happened on actual basketball plays – such as stepping on the foot of a player while landing from a shot attempt. In that sense, it’s a relief. It also helps that every sprain has been relatively minor; he has missed a total of two games this season.
At the same time, this is his second sprain in 15 days, which can’t be ignored. Knowing the stubbornness in Curry, though, he will attempt to come back again as soon as possible, especially with the Warriors in the hunt for solid playoff positioning. He even tried to come back on Monday to finish the game against the wishes of the training staff and his coach, despite obvious pain and loss of mobility.
It will be up to coach Mark Jackson to make the necessary call to give his valuable guard some time to heal before the situation becomes a chronic issue again. For the sake of rest, the All-Star break couldn’t come soon enough for Curry and his “shmankle”.
