- The Nets appear to be strongly interested in acquiring Hawks forward Josh Smith, according to Broussard: “The Brooklyn Nets are aggressively pursuing a trade for Atlanta Hawks star forward Josh Smith, league sources told ESPN. The two teams are engaged in discussions, but one source said while “there has been lots of talk, nothing is close yet.” As the NBA’s Feb. 21 trade deadline nears, Brooklyn is proving to be one of the most active teams in the league. As reported by ESPN.com on Friday, sources said the Nets also are talking with the Charlotte Bobcats about a Kris Humphries-for-Ben Gordon trade. While the Nets certainly want Gordon, sources said acquiring Smith is their higher priority. A trade for Smith would seemingly kill a deal for Gordon, because Humphries is one of the players being discussed with Atlanta.”
- Danny Granger has practiced with the Pacers and could return to game action for the first time on Wednesday, according to Mike Wells of USA Today: “The Pacers may get their fifth starter from last season — Danny Granger — back as early as Wednesday against the Charlotte Bobcats. Granger, out all season with a left knee injury, went through his first full-court practice Sunday. The Pacers must decide if it’s important for Granger to play before the All-Star break this weekend or wait until Feb. 20 against the New York Knicks. Granger is staying in Indianapolis over the break to continue working out. “I thought he looked great,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said about Granger’s first extensive practice. “We have to see how his body responds, obviously. Have him go through another practice Tuesday and see where we’re at. I think it could be helpful to get his feet wet on Wednesday, but we have to make sure he feels good.”
- The Jazz may want to keep Al Jefferson more than Paul Millsap, according to Ric Bucher: “Latest word on Utah Jazz and who they’ll keep vs. deal between Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap: Jefferson is the like -liest to stay right now, according to several opposing team executives. Consensus is the Jazz can’t afford to keep both with Gordon Hayward soon to be eligible for an extension and the belief that Hayward is in the team’s long-term plans.”
- Anderson Varejao opened up about his potentially life-threatening blood clot, from Marc. J. Spears of Yahoo Sports: “Cleveland’s Anderson Varejao didn’t realize the blood clot in his lower right lung was life-threatening until after surgery corrected the problem, the Cavaliers’ forward told Yahoo! Sports in his first interview since the health scare.”I was having my best season, the best time of my life, and a week later I’m in the hospital and I could be dead,” Varejao said. “It’s crazy. I’m very lucky.” Varejao had trouble sleeping and suffered back and chest pain shortly after having surgery on his quadriceps near his right knee on Jan. 10. He didn’t waste time telling the Cavaliers’ medical staff. A CT scan revealed the blood clot in his left lung, sending him back to the operating room.”
- A report surfaced last week that the Hawks are not willing to pay Josh Smith the max, but is it true? Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the answer: “In the simplest of terms, following the season Smith can get a maximum deal of four years, about $70 million from another team or five years, about $94 million from the Hawks. Certainly, there is the possibility of something in between. There have been no contract talks between the Hawks and Smith since the start of the season. I am told, by multiple sources, that a report that the Hawks have told Smith they will not pay him a maximum contract and are actively trying to trade him is not accurate. Are there trade talks going on? Most certainly with the trade deadline on Feb. 21 there likely have been talks about every player in the Hawks locker room at some point. An organization typically wants to know the market for its players and/or players they might be interested in acquiring. It’s part of the game.”
