The First Lady with the everpresent, fashionista bangs (she called her new hairstyle her own mid-life crisis manifestation) is out there again today, this time teaming up with Nike to promote her campaign to improve the health and reduce the obesity of America’s children.
Studies show kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day to stay healthy, but they are spending an average of seven or more hours a day in front of a screen, and only 1 in 3 kids are active daily.
In addition to the health benefits of an active lifestyle, research indicates that regular physical activity can improve test scores, classroom behavior and attendance.
Yet, only 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle schools and 2% of high schools currently offer daily P.E. classes, and only 9 states require recess in elementary schools.
Serena Williams and Bo Jackson are among the athletes attending today’s event at 11 a.m. local time in Chicago. Michaelle Obama will also be joined by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Nike CEO Mark Parker, Nike’s Vice President & General Manager for North America, Elliott Hill, and Nike’s Vice President & General Manager for Access to Sport, Lisa MacCallum.
