CHA @ POR: Just like we drew it up. Seven Blazers scored in double figures. You expect it from all five starters most nights, but suddenly (finally?) there’s a bench. Eric Maynor (10 PTS, 3 AST, 2 REB in 23:32) is a legitimate sixth man who can back up both guard spots and Meyers Leonard (15 PTS, 6 REB in 20:38) has shown dramatic improvement lately; he can fill in at PF or C. Nicolas Batum (20 PTS, 5 AST, 4 REB) and Wesley Matthews (14 PTS, 4 AST) played more minutes than expected; otherwise this one followed the script. LaMarcus Aldridge (23 PTS, 14 REB, 5 AST, 3 BLK) put up his best numbers in more than three weeks. Charlotte scored 105 points without ever threatening. They lost Byron Mullens to a knee injury after three minutes, so well-travelled Josh McRoberts (9 PTS, 8 REB, 3 AST) is currently the #1 PF. Rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had his best line (17 PTS, 10 REB) since December.
TOR @ GSW: After last week’s 0-4 road trip, the Warriors were fully extended to win at home. Stephen Curry (26 PTS, 12 AST, 5 REB) stayed hot, David Lee (29 PTS, 11 REB, 5 AST) had big numbers and Klay Thompson (22 PTS, 4 AST) drilled four of five from downtown Berkeley. Andrew Bogut returned after missing six games and while his numbers were modest (8 PTS, 8 REB, 1 BLK) his presence gives others more room. Rudy Gay (26 PTS, 5 REB, 4 STL) returned after sitting one out with back spasms, and we told you Andrea Bargnani (26 PTS, 7 REB, 5-of-7 3-pointers) would come to life this week, away from the Toronto boobirds. Amir Johnson was fantastic in 32 minutes off the bench — 23 points on 10-10 shooting, 15 rebounds and two blocks. Kyle Lowry just missed a triple-double (11 PTS, 11 REB, 9 AST, 2 STL) in this entertaining affair.
Tuesday Previews
BOS @ PHI: Of the three games tonight, this one is least exciting for fantasy owners. The Sixers are offensively challenged and the Celtics are content to keep the score low. Paul Pierce might be extra sharp after three days off, Kevin Garnett should handle Spencer Hawes and Jeff Green is the main scorer off the bench. If defensive stopper Avery Bradley can limit the production of Jrue Holiday, Boston should prevail over a floundering team that’s lost eight of their last nine and gone just 12-27 since a promising start to the season.
LAL @ OKC: You know what you’re getting here — Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant vs. Kobe Bryant. Everyone else, even Dwight Howard, is a role player for those superstars. So far, there has been no word of a suspension for Serge Ibaka, whose low blow to Blake Griffin didn’t look accidental. If the league does make him sit this one out, Nick Collison is the spot start. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but if the Lakers do make the playoffs, and the Thunder gains ground on San Antonio while Tony Parker is out, these teams could meet in the first round. L.A. is playing with desperation and this could be a lot of fun to watch.
DEN @ SAC: The wackiest game of the trio and the hardest to predict. The Nuggets aren’t as good away from home and they have to be a bit tired from playing last night, while the Kings won’t mind turning it into a track meet. If defense is an afterthought, there could be plenty of juicy stats, but for whom? Marcus Thornton has been lighting it up off the Sacramento bench, and John Salmons had the hot hand last game. As an owner of Patrick Patterson, I’m disappointed. Why would you trade #5 overall pick Thomas Robinson for someone, only to bury him on the bench? Jason Thompson seems determined to keep his job and Patterson’s value has disappeared. DeMarcus Cousins has played less than 24 minutes in three straight games, due to foul trouble and apathy. He’s due to wake up.
