Freeroll on Friday, Plus Another Beat Sheridan Challenge
In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”
That could describe the Sheridan Hoops Freeroll, which has attracted more than 1,100 entries on three different occasions. Of course everyone has to join — hey, it’s money for nothing, $100 cash to someone for no entry fee — but your odds of winning even a small prize are much, much worse than in $2 leagues.
Last night was a close-but-no-cigar finish for me, as most of my teams were in the top 15 or 20 percent but only one cashed. I won $10 for coming 28th (out of 550) in the $1,000 GPP. That illustrates the big differences between money leagues and the Freeroll. Entries are capped instead of unlimited, the total prize pool is $1,000 instead of $300, and the top 50 win cash, not the top 15. That’s less than half as many teams, and $700 more money paid out to three times as many winners.
We are also working on a special contest where you can challenge a legendary basketball expert for money. Details will be available soon, but it will be capped at 40 teams, have a $22 entry fee and pay out some serious cash to the winners, plus a $5 bonus for everyone who finishes ahead of Chris Sheridan.

There are only three NBA games this evening, but picking the best 8-man lineup without exceeding the $10,000 salary cap is still challenging, and lucrative to those who come closest. There’s plenty of superstar talent available; in the lower and middle price ranges you notice less variety than usual. Here’s one of my lineups, subject to change until the 7:00 EST deadline.
F1 Kevin Durant (OKC-F) $21,844
F2 Paul Pierce (BOS-F) $16,519
G1 Marcus Thornton (SAC-G) $11,994
G2 Corey Brewer (DEN-G) $9,026
C1 Kevin Garnett (BOS-C) $14,338
C2 JaVale McGee (DEN-C) $9,835
U1 Jeff Green (BOS-F) $11,023
U2 Royal Ivey (PHI-G) $4,600
Position-wise, C is very thin. DeMarcus Cousins ($14,922) could be worth the money if he’s in the mood and many people will pay extra for Dwight Howard, but I’m going with the well-rested Kevin Garnett. If the league suspends Ibaka, that would make Kendrick Perkins ($8,521) more valuable and Nick Collison ($6,470) might also be worth using.
