- Al Iannazzone of Newsday likes what Kenyon Martin has brought to the Knicks: “Martin signed his second 10-day contract with the Knicks on Tuesday. After his performance against the Thunder, it would be surprising if the Knicks don’t sign Martin for the rest of the season. They’ve already lost (Rasheed) Wallace to foot surgery. There also will be games when the Knicks, who didn’t practice Friday, need more athleticism against some quicker teams, and Martin is a better fit than (Marcus) Camby or (Kurt) Thomas. Martin could be an asset if the Knicks meet the Heat in the playoffs, whether it be guarding LeBron James or Chris Bosh or committing a hard, playoff-type foul.”

- Dwight Howard returns to Orlando this week when the Lakers play the Magic. Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com found out how he’s feeling about it: “I understand that we’re about to play Orlando,” Howard said. “They’re just trying to get everybody riled up for the game and it’s understandable, but I love that city. I had eight great years there. We accomplished a lot, but that’s over with. It’s in the past. We all have to move forward. I know people are getting upset, but we all have to move forward.” Howard does not anticipate a warm welcome. “I know things are going to happen,” Howard said. “I know a lot of people are upset that I left and the way I left but I always think about, I spent eight great years in Orlando and it was an unbelievable time and it ended on a bad note, but that should never erase the years that we had of happiness. It’s over with now.” Is Howard ready to face the music? “I have no choice but to be ready,” Howard said. He added after Friday’s game, “I’ve thought about wearing some earplugs.”

- Brandon Jennings is remarkably candid with his playoff opponent preferences, according to Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: “While he wants the Bucks to move up in the playoff seedings if possible, he said it’s OK with him to face the top-seeded Miami Heat in the first round. That’s the Heat, as in the streaking team that has won 16 straight games entering a home game against Philadelphia on Friday. “The two games that we played Miami so far, we matched up well against them,” Jennings said. “If you ask me, that’s who I would want to play first round, Miami. Just the fact over the years, a lot of the games have gone down to the wire with us and Miami. Right now we haven’t really played well against the Knicks. I just feel better if we play Miami first round, just the fact we have good games against them. I don’t know if it’s because they’re the champs or what, but we always play harder against Miami.” … The Bucks have split two games with the Heat this season, losing 113-106, in overtime on Nov. 21 at Miami and winning, 104-85, on Dec. 29 at home.”

- The latest on the Kings saga comes from Tony Bizjak, Dale Kasler, and Ryan Lillis at the Sacramento Bee: “Last week, a triumphant Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson announced a potential Kings purchase group had submitted a fair and competitive offer to keep the team in town. Friday night, NBA Commissioner David Stern said no, not quite. Speaking to the news media before a Golden State Warriors game in Oakland, the commissioner delivered a bombshell, saying a Sacramento group’s counteroffer to buy the team does not measure up in dollars to a tentative deal the Kings recently signed with a group that hopes to move the team to Seattle. “The counter bid has got very strong financial people behind it, but it is not quite there in comparison to the Seattle bid,” Stern said. “There is a substantial variance.” “
