The biggest game on Monday night was the match between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs – a clash between two of the very best teams in the Western Conference.
It was expected to be a dog fight, but the Spurs ran away with the game with a big push in the fourth quarter to lead by as many as 18 points, despite playing without point guard Tony Parker. For the Thunder, who had previously lost five consecutive games at the AT&T Center, playing their fourth game in five nights proved to be too much of a task against the one team that has been even better than them this season.
The end result – a 105-93 victory for San Antonio – had former player and current TNT analyst Steve Kerr beaming with excitement for the possibility of a match between the Spurs and the Miami Heat in the playoffs:
So basically, the best team from the West has the best chance against the best team from the East. Sounds about right. Kerr does have a great point about the versatility in which the Spurs could attack the Heat should the two teams find a way to meet each other in the Finals. Size could be the Achilles heel for Miami when the pace slows down in postseason, and a healthy dose of Tiago Splitter and Tim Duncan is sure to cause some headaches for Chris Bosh and whatever other big the Heat may throw out there. After all, this is the same team that allowed Nikola Vucevic to average 22.5 points and 25 rebounds against them – more than double his season averages.
At the end of the day, it’s a tad too soon to have this conversation, but it’s certainly something to keep in mind as we approach the final stretch of the season.
