SAN ANTONIO SPURS: Point guard Nando de Colo has had only garbage time since Tony Parker went down. Can’t see Gregg Popovich playing a rookie over postseason-tested Gary Neal or even pace-changer Patty Mills once the postseason arrives.
OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER: First-round picks Perry Jones III and Jeremy Lamb probably know every landmark on the 100-mile stretch of I-44 between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Watch and learn, youngsters.
MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES: As erratic as Jerryd Bayless can be, coach Lionel Hollins still will trust him to back up Mike Conley more than Tony Wroten, who is on the fringes of the rotation now but won’t be in May. Chris Johnson also will be watching.
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS: Recent signee Maalik Wayns is their only rookie and their fourth-string point guard. He will be lucky to be on the postseason roster.
DENVER NUGGETS: French shooting guard Evan Fournier is buried behind Denver’s awesome depth and only plays in garbage time. At least he is on the NBA roster; Quincy Miller has been in the D-League since Dec. 27.
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS: No team will be counting on rookies in the postseason more than the Warriors, who have three in their rotation. Harrison Barnes will be the highest-scoring rookie in the playoffs and could have a first-round assignment of Kevin Durant, even though his defense has been suspect. It will be difficult for coach Mark Jackson to use his three-guard lineup against the Thunder and put the shorter Klay Thompson on the scoring leader. Draymond Green, a better defender, will continue to spell Barnes. And center Festus Ezeli, a starter for most of the season, will back up Andrew Bogut. Guard Kent Bazemore will see spot defensive duty at best.
HOUSTON ROCKETS: Another team relying heavily on rookies, although not as much as Golden State. The shuffling at the trading deadline has left shooter Donatas Motiejunas and bruiser Thomas Robinson sharing power forward. Unless coach Kevin McHale leans on his small lineup with Chandler Parsons at the 4-spot, both rookies will be counted on in the postseason. There could be risky spot minutes for guard Patrick Beverley, although Aaron Brooks could take those, and center Tim Olbrecht, who is Omer Asik’s only backup. Fellow rooks Terrence Jones and Royce White will be leading cheers.
LOS ANGELES LAKERS: With Pau Gasol due back soon, center Robert Sacre will go back to his usual role of jumping out of his seat every time a teammate makes anything resembling a play that is not awful.
On to the rankings.
