The Georgetown Hoyas are back in the NCAA Tournament, and this time around, they appear to have boom potential. They were the 2013 Big East regular season champions and are led by a National Player of the Year award candidate.
So what do you need to know about the Hoyas?
1. The Georgetown Hoyas are led by head coach John Thompson III. JT3 is the son of Naismath Basketball Hall of fame legend and former Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr., whom led the Hoyas to three Final Four appearances and one National Title. Thompson III followed in his father’s footsteps by leading Georgetown to an appearance in the 2007 Final Four.
2. In case you haven’t heard, Otto Porter is pretty good. Porter won the Big East Player of the Year award, is a Wooden Award finalist and may just be the most well-rounded player in the nation. His averages of 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.9 blocks on 43.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc proves such.
3. Georgetown’s scoring defense is one of the best in the nation. The Hoyas rank ninth in opponent points per game, seventh in opponent field goal percentage and 36th in opponent three-point field goal percentage.
4. If you’re looking for an X-Factor, it’s D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The Hoyas are 10-2 when the freshman guard scores in double-figures. More impressively, they’ve won eight of their past nine games in which DVSR has reached said plateau.
5. If you’re looking for a team that has momentum on their side, Georgetown is your squad. After beginning the season at 12-4, they’ve won 13 of their past 15 games. That includes victories over Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame and two wins against Syracuse.
