MEM @ NYK: Good for the Knicks, who kept up their intensity for a second win in 24 hours. J.R. Smith (35 PTS, 7 REB, 2 AST) was the hero, as Memphis prevented Carmelo Anthony (22 PTS, 7 REB, 3 AST) from doing too much damage. Iman Shumpert (16 PTS, 3 REB, 2 STL) was effective in just 21:25 as the starting SF. In a huge surprise, Marc Gasol (13 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST) returned for Memphis; his abdominal tear must be minor. Mike Conley (26 PTS, 6 AST, 4 REB) and sixth man Jerryd Bayless (24 PTS) led the Grizzlies, Tony Allen (18 PTS, 10 REB, 2 STL) was very sharp but Zach Randolph was sleepwalking out there — 3 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST and 5 TO is not what Z-Bo owners expect.
LAC @ NOH: Using their superior talent and depth, the Clippers got the job done. Chris Paul (16 PTS, 9 AST, 6 REB, 4 STL) completely dominated Greivis Vasquez, who was scoreless in 28 minutes on his wonky ankle. Blake Griffin (19 PTS, 5 REB) was sharp, and Chauncey Billups (11 PTS, 2 AST in 13:24) returned, only to re-aggravate his groin strain. Eric Gordon (24 PTS, 3 AST, 3 STL) led the Pelicans-to-be, with Anthony Davis (19 PTS, 9 REB strong up front, but Ryan Anderson (8 PTS, 5 REB) cooled off and they need his scoring to compete.
DEN @ SAS: Just imagine, these teams will be even better in the playoffs. That was a fine display of basketball. Tony Parker (18 PTS, 11 AST, 3 REB) and Tim Duncan (23 PTS, 14 REB, 5 BLK) were outstanding and Danny Green (20 PTS, 4 REB) knocked down six 3-pointers as the Spurs escaped with a narrow win. Though he wasn’t himself, Ty Lawson (2 PTS, 3 AST, 2 STL in 19:35) did return from his heel injury. The Denver bench was fantastic, especially JaVale McGee (21 PTS, 11 REB, 3 BLK, 2 STL) and Wilson Chandler (15 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST). Andre Miller (14 PTS, 8 AST, 5 REB) also played well, though he missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.
IND @ HOU: It wasn’t a great return for George Hill (2 PTS on 1-for-11 shooting) but Lance Stephenson (21 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST) was sharp after resting a sore hip last game and David West (back) might return soon. Roy Hibbert (28 PTS, 13 REB, 3 AST, 3 BLK) was the difference in this one, as Paul George (16 PTS, 6 REB, 3 AST, 3 STL) negated those numbers with 4-17 shooting. James Harden (22 PTS, 8 AST, 4 REB) hit just six of 24 attempts for Houston and Omer Asik was no match for Hibbert. Only a nice effort by Greg Smith off the bench (18 PTS, 19 REB) made the score respectable.
WAS @ OKC: When the Wizards lose, don’t blame John Wall (18 PTS, 12 AST, 4 REB) even when he shoots 3-for-18, because he can’t do it alone. Martell Webster (abdomen) and Trevor Ariza (flu) were unable to return and Nene was held out with a sore knee. Russell Westbrook (21 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST) was needed for just 25 minutes and Kevin Durant (20 PTS, 6 REB, 6 AST) played 31:28 as the Thunder went to the bench early, using 13 players. It would have been garbage time for Washington too, if anyone else had been available.
PHO @ UTA: It’s the silly season, and Suns coach Lindsey Hunter chose to give his best player Goran Dragic the night off. I guess he would get in trouble if they just forfeited. Luis Scola (20 PTS, 7 REB) and Wes Johnson (22 PTS, 3 STL, 4 3PTM) rewarded their brave fantasy owners while Utah cruised to an easy victory. Al Jefferson (25 PTS, 9 REB, 2 STL, 2 BLK) and Gordon Hayward (25 PTS, 6 AST, 5 REB) led the way as the Jazz shot 52% to keep pace one game behind the Lakers in their battle for the final playoff spot.
