Live Longshots (Pitchers)
“Wei-Yin Chen was cruising against the Red Sox until Daniel Nava bit him with a 3-run homer. The lefty with a wide assortment of pitches and good command should do well in Yankee Stadium. $8,933 is dirt cheap for a SP of his caliber.”
Another potential bargain is Dillon Gee of the Mets. “Not a big strikeout guy, but in a spacious park against the struggling Twins’ offense, the $9,591 salary makes him worth a play.”
Yesterday I gave you Bobby Parnell at a rock-bottom $1,500 and as predicted, he earned 4.05 points with a save. Of course, I used three SP and lost. You could double up on Parnell, whose price has yet to be adjusted, but today my RP special is Aroldis Chapman ($2,490) who hasn’t pitched for a week. Even if there isn’t a save situation, he needs work and is a threat to strike out the side.
Live Longshots (Hitters)
Coming off a big game, Rob considers Nick Swisher ($6,664) an excellent value. “He faces tough righty Jake Peavy but should also see a reliever or two and the price hasn’t rocketed upwards yet.”
Though neither of us is thrilled with the Blue Jays’ desperation ploy of playing him at 3B, Jose Bautista ($8,511) seems to have recovered from his sprained ankle and hit an absolute bomb last night.
Santiago Perez “hit the knuckleball well last night and will probably be batting cleanup again. The price ($4,920) is right, even against a hard-throwing righthander like Morrow.”
Our master of strategy believes that a breakout candidate (or two) should be in every lineup. “Even if they don’t score big, the low salary won’t hurt your team too much. Anthony Rizzo ($6,857) has a classic lefty swing and Tim Lincecum has been shaky.”
Players to Avoid
Jed Lowrie ($9,581) has been cooling off and prefers lefty pitching; Anibal Sanchez is a tough righthander.
Rob says, “I could regret this, but Miguel Cabrera (an otherworldly $14,057) is simply priced too high for a day game in Oakland.”
Avoid the struggling Josh Beckett. “In Arizona’s great hitting environment, the middling price of $11,653 suggests we look elsewhere for value.”
Roy Halladay ($13,297) is risky and Dudek thinks another poor start today would be a clear indication that something is seriously wrong. “On one hand, it’s the woeful Marlins in a pitcher’s park. On the other, Doc has not had his usual command or velocity. Because I can’t see how Halladay will outperform his salary, the variance is all to the downside.”
