TRIVIA: Golden State’s Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry each have made more than 200 3-pointers this season. Who was the last pair of teammates to do that? Answer below.
THE END OF CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT: Spurs forward Boris Diaw has a film production company that clearly has a lot of time on its hands.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Washington Wizards forward Martell Webster, after being told that Miami forward Rashard Lewis said the Heat would be a playoff team without the “Big Three”:
“Then he woke up, right?”
LINE OF THE WEEK: Kobe Bryant, LA Lakers at Portland, April 10: 48 minutes, 14-27 FGs, 1-5 3-pointers, 18-18 FTs, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals, four blocks, one turnover, 47 points in a 113-106 win. In a game the Lakers absolutely had to have in their playoff push, Bryant nearly notched his first career five-by-five and became the first Portland visitor to score at least 47 points since Larry Bird in 1986, producing chants of “M-V-P!”
LINE OF THE WEAK: Kyrie Irving, Cleveland at Philadelphia, April 14: 19 minutes, 1-6 FGs, 1-4 3-pointers, 1-1 FTs, three rebounds, three assists, one steal, four turnovers, five fouls, four points in a 91-77 loss. There’s something about the Sixers that brings out the worst in Irving; in four career games, he has averaged 8.5 points on 13-of-43 shooting. The four points in this one were a career low.
TRILLION WATCH: Just one prominent effort this week as Minnesota rookie Chris Johnson registered a 4 trillion at Golden State on Tuesday. Honorable mention to New York forward Steve Novak, who misfired one 3-pointer to avert a 12 trillion Thursday at Chicago. Later this week, we will be running down the best (worst?) performances of the season from the heroes of zeros.
GAME OF THE WEEK: Utah at Memphis, April 17. The Jazz almost certainly will need to win this game to get into the playoffs. With one game separating the third and fifth seeds in the West, the Grizzlies may need it, too.
GAME OF THE WEAK: Cleveland at Charlotte, April 17. This gem starts at the same time as Jazz-Grizzlies and, believe it or not, has way more Z’s.
TWO MINUTES: No team – not the Heat, not the Spurs, not the Thunder – has been a better front-runner than the Clippers, who are a staggering 45-3 when leading at halftime. Miami is 42-3, San Antonio is 43-6 and Oklahoma City is 54-7. However, the Heat are by far the best comeback team with a 19-10 mark when trailing at the half. No other team is above .500; the Spurs are next-best at 14-14. The Clippers are 8-22 and the Thunder are 5-14. … When the Mavericks trounced the Hornets on Sunday night, they finally got back to .500 at 40-40, meaning those who grew beards as motivation – including Dirk Nowitzki, O.J. Mayo, Vince Carter and Chris Kaman – could finally shave. Nowitzki took his off almost immediately, shaving before he even showered. “It’s been too long,” he said. “My wife stopped kissing me somewhere in February.” The Mavs had not been at .500 since they were 11-11 and
the players made the pledge in late January. … The number of bench players to score at least 35 points in a game this season reached six when Chicago’s Nate Robinson did it Thursday vs. New York, helping end his former team’s 13-game winning streak. Robinson joined J.R. Smith (three times), Wilson Chandler (twice), Marcus Thornton, Samuel Dalembert and Alan Anderson (once each). … Another bench explosion came from Bucks rookie big man John Henson, who had 17 points, 25 rebounds and seven blocks in Wednesday’s loss to Orlando. Henson is the first player to sweep 25 boards off the bench since Dennis Rodman with San Antonio on Jan. 22, 1995. … Warriors coach Mark Jackson shed a tear or two when his team clinched just its second postseason appearance since 1994. But he wants his relatively young team to think bigger. “I told them, ‘Don’t you dare go to the baggage claim, because this is just a layover. This is not our final destination,” he said. “Celebrate that we got here, but this is not our final destination.” That remains to be seen. With consecutive losses, Golden State has dropped to seventh in the West and looks like it may get San Antonio in the first round. The Warriors have lost 29 straight road games to the Spurs dating to Feb. 14, 1997, four months before San Antonio drafted Tim Duncan. … Nets forward Reggie Evans has nine 20-rebound games, which is more than the next two guys – Tyson Chandler (4) and Dwight Howard (4) – combined. … A symbol of the 76ers’ sorry season came Friday night in Washington, when Dorell Wright rose for a 3-pointer and lost the ball, which sailed 30 feet behind him into the crowd. “It just flew out of my hands,” he said. “I don’t know what the heck that was.”
Trivia Answer: Boston’s Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce in 2001-02. … Happy 29th Birthday, Rodney Carney. … I just don’t know how the Nets can possibly survive without Jay-Z as an owner.
