RANK | PLAYER | RUNDOWN | LAST |
1 | CHRIS PAUL, G, LA CLIPPERS: A 3-0 week, including a Saturday night victory over Grizzlies—who Team CP3 will play in round one—means a lot to us, but not more than his 4.3 assist-to-turnover ratio, or 10 dimes and six rebounds per game over last three. | 1
2 | AL JEFFERSON, C, UTAH: Big Al refuses to let his team’s playoff hopes die. T-Wolves or not, Friday’s 40-point, 13-rebound, 6-assist effort was sensational. Followed up with 23 points and 8 rebounds in Monday’s home-and-home sweep of Wolves. | 2
3 | DWIGHT HOWARD, C, LA LAKERS: A 4-0 week with backs against the wall is quite impressive. But the 26-point, 17-rebound effort in a win over the Spurs on Sunday? Delightful. Lakers need more, sans Kobe, but this will suffice for now. One more win and they’re in. | 3
4 | JOSH SMITH, F, ATLANTA: Battling Bulls for fifth seed, Hawks went 2-0 behind Smith’s 26 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. Even more impressive? He shot 63 percent from the field. | 5
5 | DAVID WEST, F, INDIANA: Last week in three games: 19.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals on 20-of-29 shooting from the field. But Pacers went just 1-2 and now secretly hope to battle Hawks (not Bulls) in first round. Did we mention he only missed nine shots last week, though? | 6
6 | NATE ROBINSON, G, CHICAGO: Dropped 35 on the Knicks and busted up his old team’s 13-game win streak. Bulls just 1-3 over past week, but surprisingly productive with 22 points, 3.5 dimes and 3.0 boards per game off the bench. No big man bias around here. | 9
7 | PAUL MILLSAP, F, UTAH: A miserable week, personally. 8.3 points? 5.7 boards? That’s a stat line we’d more expect from Paul Ryan than Paul Millsap. Even worse was 43 percent shooting from the field and 2.7 turnovers per game. | 4
8 | COREY BREWER, F, DENVER: Dropped 28 in Wednesday’s win over Spurs but has made just 7-of-31 shots over last three games. That’s 23 percent, which is awful. Even worse? No blocks or steals in same stretch. The 3-1 week is almost a saving grace. Almost. |
7 | |
9 | TONY ALLEN, G, MEMPHIS: Numbers over the past week far from eye-popping, but Griz ain’t winning any playoff games without Allen’s defense. A birdie tells us, by the way, he’s on the short list of those being considered for Chris Sheridan’s DPOY vote. Here’s why. | 12
10 | ANDRAY BLATCHE, C, BROOKLYN: Still one of the league’s most productive reserves. Nets were 4-1 last week, and two stinkers aside, contributed 12.0 points and 7.3 rebounds. Would start for many teams in the league. Nets fourth out East, what’s not to like? | 14
11 | BRANDON JENNINGS, G, MILWAUKEE (R): Returned from a three-game absence due to a strained Achilles and shot 1-of-11 in Monday night’s loss. Bucks are reeling with five straight losses, though battle with Heat in playoffs will have final say on market value. | 8
12 | NIKOLA PEKOVIC, C, MINNESOTA (R): Burst onto the list last week, despite our concerns over his health. Follows up by missing team’s last three games. Sigh. How do you say “frail” in Montenegrin? How do you say “rich”? What about “confused”? That’s what we are. | 10
13 | J.J. HICKSON, F, PORTLAND: Just when we’re ready to give up, he gives us 19 points, nine boards and six assists against Nuggets on Sunday. Problem? Blazers have lost 11 straight and are 5-15 over last 20. Can he play for a winner? Time will tell. | 13
14 | TYREKE EVANS, G, SACRAMENTO (R): Minutes have steadily decreased in order to help tanking effort, but averaged same amount of turnovers per game last week as assists (1.8). Team went 1-3 and got 8.5 points and 2.0 rebounds from former ROY. Gotta call it like we see it. | 11
15 | KEVIN MARTIN, G, OKLAHOMA CITY: Scored over 20 points for the first time since Feb. 6 against the Warriors on Thursday, then missed consecutive games with a sore back. We’re all confused, but at least OKC locked up the first seed out West. *Shrug* | 15 |
DROPPED OUT:
- Nobody
ON THE BUBBLE:
- Earl Clark, F, LA Lakers: With Pau Gasol playing at a high level, cracking in will be tough, but not impossible.
- Chris Copeland, F, New York: Averaging 17.5 points per game over last six.
- Gerald Henderson, G, Charlotte: If he played elsewhere, he’d be on the radar, for sure.
