Best Bets (Hitters)
Many hitters are priced at $10,000 or more. I won’t be able to afford them, as I’m loading up on SP. If you use a reliever in the P spot, the big bats become more affordable. Joey Votto ($11,267) faces the less-than-scary Kyle Kendrick in a fabulous hitter’s park.
Chris Davis ($11,261) is at home with the platoon advantage over the truly mediocre (4.66 career ERA) Roberto Hernandez.
Votto’s teammate Jay Bruce has all the same advantages and at $8,409 is a terrific play. I know, 5-for-11 with 2 HR vs. Kendrick is too small a sample size to be statistically relevant. Well, those memories are quite vivid to the players, and I’ll go with the confident guy.
Similarly, Ryan Braun ($12,408) has faced Barry Zito for a grand total of 18 plate appearances. He has a double, a triple, 3 HR and 4 BB for an insane OPS of 1.714. Zito is off to a great start and has won us a lot of money so far, but he’s better in his spacious home park.
Rob likes all RH batters for the Cardinals today against the struggling southpaw Jonathan Sanchez. Take your pick from David Freese ($8,106), Matt Holliday ($11,092) and Yadier Molina ($9,301) but possibly the best value of all is Allen Craig, whose $8,521 tag is enticing.
He could fit in the bargain bin at $7,311 but Ryan Zimmerman — whose first HR last night (and 12.5 points) was predicted here — is a terrific hitter up against an inexperienced hurler and both of us will be using him again tonight.
Live Longshots (Hitters)
I’ll take the category “Right-handed Cubs hitters” for $1,000 in Jeopardy. The answer is, “Most likely to enjoy a big game in Wrigley against Texas southpaw Derek Holland.” The question is, “Who are Alfonso Soriano ($$5,138) and Starlin Castro ($6,971)?”
Edwin Encarnacion is really heating up after a slow start and still a good value at $7,730; Rogers Centre favors the homerun hitter.
We gave you Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker yesterday and he scored 8.75 points. On a 4-game hit streak and facing another righty, at $5,894 let’s ride the hot stick.
Asdrubal Cabrera faces Boston lefty Doubront at a bargain price of $5,347 and can switch-hit against any reliever. After a few strikeouts lately, he’ll be trying to make contact.
Players to Avoid
Dillon Gee ($8,977) is guaranteed to get you zero points as he starts the afternoon game. The same applies to Juan Nicasio ($9,543) who goes for the Rockies.
The dynamic duo of Prince Fielder ($13,868) and Miguel Cabrera ($13,762) might put on quite a show in Seattle, where the fences have been moved in and journeyman Aaron Harang makes his first start of the year for the M’s. The thing is, at those salaries they almost have to go 3-4 with at least one HR just to pay their way.
Chris Capuano ($12,250) has been inserted into the Dodgers rotation after the injury to Zack Greinke, but isn’t “stretched out” to go much more than five innings. He’s a nice FA in a deep traditional league, who will have better nights in this format.
Kent Williams is on Twitter @SheridanFantasy and be sure to follow Rob Dudek for updates when our morning picks change during the day.
