Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the playoffs continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest news from around the league:
All-Defensive Team announced
The NBA announced on Monday that Tony Allen and LeBron James were the leading vote-getters for the 2012-2013 All-Defensive Team.
Allen led the way with 53 total points while James came in second with 52 points. The First Team was rounded out by Chris Paul (37 points), Serge Ibaka (46 points) and a tie between Tyson Chandler and Joakim Noah at center (24 points each).
Ironically, Marc Gasol, the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, was left off of the First Team. The Defensive Player of the Year award is selected by the media while the All-Defensive Team is chosen by coaches.
The Second Team consisted of Gasol (12 points), Tim Duncan (20 points), Paul George (27 points), Avery Bradley (25 points), and Mike Conley (19 points).
Allen’s Grizzlies allowed a league-low 89.3 points per game. When Allen was on the floor, Memphis allowed only 94.3 points per 100 possessions. However, when Allen was on the bench, Memphis allowed 101.1 points per 100 possessions.
Ibaka led the league with 3.03 blocks per game and Paul led the league with 2.41 steals per game.
Conley’s selection to the Second Team indicates that coaches believe the Grizzlies have three of the NBA’s best 11 defenders. No other organization had even two players.
This makes two consecutive years in which the Defensive Player of the Year was not selected to the First Team. Last season, Chandler won the award from the media but was edged out by Dwight Howard by the coaches.
Manu Ginobili previously voiced his displeasure with allowing the media pick the league’s best defender.
Jerry Sloan meets with Bucks
Sam Amick of USA Today Sports reports that Jerry Sloan and the Milwaukee Bucks have already met to discuss their vacant coaching position.
Sloan, a Hall of Famer, coached in Utah for 23 years but abruptly resigned in 2011. He has been looking to return to the league for over a year and has reportedly expressed a preference to return to a small market organization.
Sloan is well-known for his authoritative coaching style. Bucks general manager John Hammond is looking for a coach who will instill discipline in his young team.
Scott Skiles and Jim Boylan were both unsuccessful in easing the tensions in the Milwaukee locker room. Last week, it was reported that Larry Sanders and Monta Ellis nearly came to blows following the Bucks’ Game 3 loss to the Heat in the first round of the playoffs.
Larry Brown doesn’t believe in analytics
According to CBS Philadelphia, Larry Brown does not believe a basketball team can be assembled on advanced statistics. “Basketball is not like baseball,” Brown said to a Philadelphia radio station on Monday morning.
Brown spoke candidly in response to whether he believed the Sixers made the right choice to hire Sam Hinkie, a known analytics-obsessed executive, as their next general manager.
“I mean you can use that knowledge and help things, but at the end of the day it doesn’t work in basketball in my mind,” said Brown. ” . . . to me, the rocket science is this: acquire draft choices, get great players, have good contracts, and have a coach there that can develop young talent because so many of the teams are getting younger and younger. So you better have coaches there that can teach, rather than coaches there that can analyze whether stats mean something or not.”
Brown currently coaches at Southern Methodist University and has been mentioned as a possible suitor for the Nets’ coaching vacancy.
