- Dwyane Wade explained why he accepts his role as a lesser player, from Joseph Goodman of The Miami Herald: “You can only play this game for so long, and when you leave this game, what memories are you going to have? That’s what I asked myself. What memories do I want to have?” Wade said Sunday. “And those memories that I want to have are memories of success as a team. And that’s why you make decisions like this. “And it’s not easy. It’s hard.”… “Would I ever have thought five years ago that I’d be in a playoff game and I’d take seven shots —hell no — but at the end of the game, was I [upset] about it? No. We won; I moved on; had a great dinner.”… “I just want to win, man, and I’ve always wanted to win, but I still had a lot of individual stuff I wanted to prove,” Wade said. “I think five years ago I led the league in scoring. So, I still had to prove that — that I could do certain things, but to me personally, the only thing I need to prove to myself is that I can be a part of a winning team and win.”
- Tom Haberstroh of ESPN explained some of the reasons why Wade has struggled in the playoffs: “Playing through a balky knee (is there an echo in here?), Wade has averaged just 13.3 points per game in the playoffs, which is just below Reggie Jackson and a smidge above Omer Asik. He’s shooting 45.8 percent from the floor, down from 52.1 percent during the regular season. His player efficiency rating (PER) has plummeted from 24.0 in the regular season to 17.5 in the postseason. Once again, Wade’s play is begging us to doubt him again. So what do we do with this information? Do we just move right along and pretend that it isn’t happening? Of course not. Wade very well could put up 40 points in Game 4, but that shouldn’t stop us from analyzing what has been plaguing Wade so far. What exactly is happening? Unhealthy knee, unhealthy game.”
- Andre Drummond may be looking to work with Hakeem Olajuwon in the offseason, from Perry A. Farrell of Detroit Free Press (via SLAM Online): “Is Hakeem (The Dream) Olajuwon in Andre Drummond’s future? The Hall of Fame center, one of the game’s all-time great offensive players, is expected to work with the Pistons’ center-forward over the summer to help him with his offensive game, which is still in the infant stages. Drummond has been at the practice facility recently. He took about a two-week break, according to Pistons.com, before getting back into the gym to work on his game. “I’m really excited for next season,” Drummond said recently.”
- Jerry Sloan met with the Milwaukee Bucks about the vacant coaching position, according to Sam Amick of USA Today: “According to two people with knowledge of the situation, the former Utah Jazz coach who resigned abruptly in Feb. 2011 has already met with the Milwaukee Bucks about their vacant coaching position and is being seriously considered. The people spoke to USA TODAY Sports the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the coaching search. Sloan has been looking for a landing spot for quite some time, but he could be a tailor-made fit for a Bucks situation that has much in common with the Utah job he held for 23 years.”
- Steve Clifford also interviewed for the Bucks coaching gig, from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports: “Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Steve Clifford is interviewing with the Milwaukee Bucks for their head-coaching job on Monday, league sources told Yahoo! Sports… Clifford fits the profile of the kind of hands-on, defensive-minded candidate that Hammond has been seeking to replace interim coach Jim Boylan. Clifford will also interview with the Charlotte Bobcats in the near future. Clifford comes with a strong pedigree, serving as an assistant coach for Stan Van Gundy in Orlando and Jeff Van Gundy in Houston and New York. Clifford also worked with Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau on the Rockets and Knicks staffs. Both Van Gundys consider Clifford a comparably elite head-coaching candidate.”
- The drama between Kobe Bryant and his parents about his memorabilia items looks to continue for the foreseeable future, from Mark Medina of Daily News: “Bryant’s mother, Pamela, and father, Joe, filed statements in federal court in Camden, NJ. on Monday suggesting the Lakers’ star has lied during his recent efforts to stop Pamela from giving a New Jersey-based auction house more than 100 of his basketball memorabilia from both his high school and early portion of his Lakers career. In a declaration filed in federal court in Camden Monday, Pamela insisted sworn statements from Kobe and his wife, Vanessa, “contained many false statements.” That included Kobe’s account of a May 2 phone conversation, in which she allegedly agreed he had never told her she could have his belongings.”
