Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the playoffs continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest news from around the league:
Maloofs sell Kings to Sacramento-based group
Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that the Maloof brothers have agreed to sell the Sacramento Kings for $535 million to a Sacramento-based group.
The group is led by Vivek Ranadive, a software magnate who currently owns a minority share in the Golden State Warriors.
Ranadive plans to build a new arena in downtown Sacramento with the help of public financing.
The Maloofs were hoping to sell the Kings to a Seattle-based group led by Chris Hansen. Hansen’s offer was reportedly $625 million. However, the NBA’s Board of Governors voted against the sale and eventual relocation of the Kings to Seattle by a 22-8 margin. The Maloofs needed a simple majority of 16 owners to approve the sale.

Hawks strongly considering Ettore Messina
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Atlanta Hawks are seriously considering hiring Italian-born Ettore Messina to be their next coach.
Messina would be the first European-born coach in NBA history. He currently coaches CSKA Moscow and has already been in contact with Hawks GM Danny Ferry about the position. Sources told Yahoo! Sports that Messina is intrigued by the opportunity to become a global trailblazer in the NBA.
Messina is a four-time Euroleague championship coach and a two-time Euroleague Coach of the Year. Messina was an assistant on Mike Brown’s Lakers staff in 2011-2012 and left the NBA to take a $1 million-plus a year coaching job in Russia.
Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reported that the Hawks have already interviewed Nate McMillan, Stan Van Gundy and Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer among others for the position.
While Stan Van Gundy appears to be Ferry’s top target, Wojnarowski considered Van Gundy a “long shot” to take the job.
Larry Drew is still under contract as coach until June 30. Although Drew’s teams have reached the playoffs in all three of his seasons in Atlanta, his days with the Hawks appear to be numbered.
Greg Oden looks “ready to go” in workouts
Bob Finnan of News-Herald.com reports that current draft prospect Deshaun Thomas was impressed with fellow Ohio State alum Greg Oden after the two worked out together.
Oden, the top pick in the 2007 draft, played in just 82 games from 200-09. He has not played in a game in over three seasons but has been conditioning for several months and is attempting to make a comeback.
According to Thomas, Oden’s hard work has been paying off.
“Man, he looks unbelievable,” Thomas said at the draft combine. “He’s running. He’s lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he’s ready to go. He’s running, getting in shape. I’ll tell you one thing. For a big 7-footer that’s all he does, running and getting in shape. He’s looking right.”
Oden has had five knee surgeries over the course of his short career. If he is ready to play at the start of next season, it will have been nearly four years since he last played in an NBA game.
Still, at only 25, Oden has the potential to become a solid contributor on an NBA team.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat are atop the list of teams rumored to have interest in Oden should he prove to be healthy.
