Slipping
B.J. Young, SG, Arkansas, 6’3 1/2″
There is no denying Young’s athleticism, but he was in a shooting funk all week in Chicago, and while Young shot over 40% from 3 as a freshman he will never be considered a reliable jump shooter.
At 6’3 1/2″ questions about if Young is a tweener are bound to follow him, and it won’t help his stock that he looked lost shooting in front of teams. Young will need to find his stroke and soon because teams will be watching him in pre-draft workouts closely to see if Chicago’s performance was an extended slump or a sign of things to come in the NBA. Right now, a second-rounder.
Archie Goodwin, SG, Kentucky, 6’5 1/2″
It seemed as though Young and Goodwin were going toe-to-toe to earn the honors of worst shooter in Chicago this past week.
Goodwin, who emphasized he is not a PG in front of the media, had inconsistent mechanics and never really got going from the perimeter, which was concerning to several teams watching him.
Goodwin, one of the younger prospects in the draft, did sound very mature during the interview portions of the combine and was playing aggressive on the defensive end. He has enough upside to warrant late-first round consideration.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Georgia, 6’5.5″
Caldwell-Pope showed at Georgia he is a scorer, but unfortunately in Chicago failed to consistently make his jump shot. While Caldwell-Pope was everything to his Bulldogs team this season, he did not stand out to GMs and scouts on the defensive end or as a ballhandler.
There is still time for Caldwell-Pope to turn things around, but will need to show teams he can do more than just score.
