Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the playoffs continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest news from around the league:
Clippers will not offer Del Negro new contract, have interest in David West
Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Los Angeles Clippers will not offer Vinny Del Negro a new contract. His current deal will expire at the end of June. Del Negro has been with the team since 2010-2011 and guided Los Angeles to a franchise-best 56 wins last season.
On an unrelated note, Marc Stein of ESPN reports that the Clippers plan to pursue David West this summer. West, 32, will be a free agent and should be among the best players on the open market.
West played with Chris Paul in New Orleans for six seasons and the two became very close. In 2011, Paul said West was “like a big brother.”
Presumably, the most the Clippers could offer West would be a $5.15 midlevel exception. Meanwhile, Indiana will likely have enough cap space to re-sign West to the similar two year, $20 million contract he signed in 2011.
If money wasn’t enough to keep him in Indiana, consider this: on the Pacers, West is second in scoring and rebounding. Meanwhile, with the Clippers, he would likely be relegated to a reserve role behind Blake Griffin.
The Clippers will certainly need to get creative in their recruiting pitch to lure West away from the Pacers, whom he recently called “the most together group I’ve ever been a part of.”
Stan Van Gundy confirms he will not coach next season
According to Orlando radio host David Baumann, Stan Van Gundy will not be coaching in the NBA next season. While Van Gundy is not closing the door on returning to coaching for good, he is not yet ready to come back to the NBA.
“As you get down the road more and the longer you are out, the harder it is to get back in,” said Van Gundy. “That was certainly a difficult part of the decision process for me because it’s certainly something that I miss and don’t want to close the door on for the rest of my life. But it is, not right now anyway, in the best interest of my family, so it won’t be next year.”
Rumors surfaced last week that Van Gundy had interviewed for the Bucks and Hawks coaching positions. Van Gundy, however, refuted those claims.
“I sort of laugh a little bit on jobs I supposedly interviewed for. I don’t know who those sources are. I certainly have had inquiries from people, but no job offers and I have not interviewed anywhere.”
Van Gundy was considered to be Atlanta’s top target.
He led the Orlando Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals. Over eight seasons in the league, he has never coached a team to a losing record.
Tony Parker received death threat during Game 1
KSAT.com reports that the Bexar County Sheriff’s office is investigating a death threat made against Tony Parker. Someone called the 911 with about five minutes left in the 105-83 Spurs Game 1 blowout over the Grizzlies and made a threat against the point guard.
Security was increased within the AT&T Center but the police eventually determined that there was no immediate danger.
For safe measure, Parker was escorted to his home by deputies after the game.
The incident is still under investigation.

Sounds like West will be a Clipper next season. Why wouldn’t he take half the money for a reserve role on a team that got bounced in the first round? It’s not like his current team is in the conference finals or anything. Good reporting! It was not at all a waste of time reporting that and I definitely don’t feel like I wasted my time reading it. Why stop there? How many other teams with no cap room are interested in signing big name players for half their worth?

I heard the Knicks are interested in signing Chris Paul for the $3 mil they’re saving by JR Smith opting out.
