Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the playoffs continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest from around the league:
Ujiri weighing offers from Nuggets and Raptors
According to Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca, Masai Ujiri is currently weighing offers from the Nuggets and Raptors.
Ujiri has met with the Raptors’ ownership group, MLSE, to discuss a deal that would make him their general manager. Sources claim that Toronto is prepared to offer Ujiri a four year contract worth around $9 million total. Currently in Denver, Ujiri is only making about $500,000 annually — less than half of what the average general manager in the league makes.
Still, sources are not sure whether Ujiri would be willing to leave Denver, the team he helped construct into a 57 game-winner. Moreover, sources are not sure whether Ujiri would be willing to go to a team that hasn’t reached the playoffs in five seasons.
One unnamed source familiar with the negotiations said that Ujiri was far from a resolution.
Ujiri worked as Bryan Colangelo’s top assistant in Toronto from 2008 to 2010. The Nuggets then hired him to be their vice president of basketball operations in the summer of 2010. He won the NBA’s executive of the year award with Denver in 2013.
Clippers want big name coach
Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that the Los Angeles Clippers are “going for big names first” when it comes to their coaching search.
While names like Alvin Gentry and Mike Malone have been floated around for the vacancy, a source familiar with the team says that they will pursue both Stan and Jeff Van Gundy, Brian Shaw, and Lionel Hollins as primary targets.
While Stan Van Gundy has already ruled himself out for coaching next season, Jeff has not commented publicly on any coaching vacancies.
Shaw, who is an assistant in Indiana, has said that he will wait until after the Pacers’ season before he starts entertaining coaching offers.
Hollins’ Grizzlies currently trail the Spurs 3-0 in the Western Conference finals. While Memphis will undoubtedly offer him an extension at the end of the season, the Clippers and Nets are both believed to have strong interest in him and could presumably offer more money.
Berger also says that Byron Scott is considered to be a top candidate for the Clippers because of his strong relationship with Chris Paul from their days together in New Orleans.
Rockets have become favorites for Dwight Howard
According to Bill Ingram of Hoopsworld.com, multiple sources have said that the Houston Rockets have become the favorites to land Dwight Howard. Ingram tweeted that “Dallas, Lakers and Hawks [are] all distant seconds.”
However, the Rockets will have to free up some cap space if Dwight Howard does end up choosing to sign there.
Ingram said, “Doing the math, Dwight’s max deal starts at 105% of last season, so roughly 20 million. Rox have $17.7 open w/Bev/Chandler and Smith . . . Even if they waived Chandler Parsons, Smith and Beverley they can’t get to $20 million.”
Ingram later updated by saying, “The Magic number for Dwight is just over $20.5 million in year one of his new contract….so Rockets need close to 4 million freed up.”
With young talent such as Omer Asik and Thomas Robinson on the roster, the Rockets wouldn’t have much trouble finding a trade partner to clear up the necessary space.
