According to EuroHoops, Vassilis Spanoulis, a former player for the Houston Rockets, said Jeff Van Gundy did not know him when he came to play for them. Ever since he left Van Gundy and the Rockets, Spannoulis has gone on to win EuroLeague three times, three final four MVP’s, and one overall MVP award. Here is Spannoulis’ quote about Van Gundy: “I believe that I was the wrong time in the wrong place. Unfortunately, I had never spoken with coach Van Gundy before signing to Houston. I had only conversations with the GM who was really interested on me. When I arrived, the first thing I heard was that I am a rookie, so I will not play at all and they are not counting on me! I wasn’t in the plans of the coach. I was left on the side. It was just a bad situation. The team leader was T-Mac, there was also Rafer Alston and the coach didn’t believe that I could had some minutes in the rotation. He didn’t knew me as a player. To be exact the coach didn’t had the slightest idea from European basketball and European players. I felt really bad, like I was tricked. I was already a pretty good player in Europe. The first thing coach said to me in my very first day in Houston was: “I don’t know you, you will not play, you are out.’ I felt let down. The next summer, coach Adelman came to the team, called me three times and we had some good conversations. I appreciated his gesture.” Sounds to me like Van Gundy does not have a liking for international players. If he rejoins the NBA coaching circuit, international players better hope not they are on his team.
If it was not for Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade would not have joined him to assemble the “Big 3” back in July 2010. Bosh’s agent, Henry Thomas, told ESPN that had the biggest role in bring LeBron and Dwyane to join forces in Miami. “Really with the decision, I think he was the key guy. Once he made the commitment to Miami, Dwyane was obviously going through the same thing and talking to the same teams that the other guys were talking to, but once Chris committed there, that had an impact on Dwyane staying there and I think that had an impact on LeBron coming there.” Even though Bosh has struggled mightily throughout the playoffs, it is amazing to think the Heat’s third wheel was the linchpin in deciding where all three of them went. Never underestimate the power of the Boshtrich.
Detroit is preparing to offer their head coaching position to Oklahoma City assistant, Maurice Cheeks, according to Yahoo! Sports’, Adrian Wojnarowski. Recently, Detroit’s ownership made a consensus agreement on Cheeks to be their head coach and are trying to work out the remainder of the contract with Cheeks’ agent. Before becoming the lead assistant for Scott Brooks in Oklahoma City, Cheeks was the head coach of Portland and Philadelphia from 2001-2008. His career record as a head coach is just a shade below .500 with it being 284-286. While in Oklahoma City, Cheeks was crucial in the developments of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Detroit is hoping for Cheeks to do the same with Brandon Knight, Greg Monroe, and whoever they take with the 8th pick in the upcoming draft.
Tony Parker made possibly the best shot we have seen in the NBA Finals. This column by Moke Hamilton is one of the best you’ll read in breaking it down. His ball-control and pump-fake to get LeBron James into the air to make his shot kiss off the glass was one of the more special moments in NBA Finals history. Even though his shot propelled San Antonio to a 1-0 lead over Miami, Parker has a $20 million issue right after it concludes because of a lawsuit over the Drake-Chris Brown fight before the season, according to TMZ. If you remember, Parker was in the middle of the whole brawl and was hit with a glass bottle in his eye. It caused him to wear goggles during the 2012 London Olympics.
