Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the Finals continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest from around the league:
Kidd the frontrunner in Brooklyn
Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Jason Kidd impressed the Nets’ brass in his interview yesterday. In fact, Kidd was so impressive that he has actually emerged as the strong frontrunner for the team’s head coaching position.
Sources close to the Nets’ coaching search informed Wojnarowski that negotiations on a possible contract are underway and that Kidd could be hired before the week’s end.
Kidd retired from the league on June 3 and has been working diligently to find a supporting staff of veteran coaches who will help him overcome the steep learning curve that he faces as a rookie head coach.
Brooklyn general manager Billy King is slated to interview Pacers’ assistant Brian Shaw for the position tomorrow but it is unclear whether that meeting will still happen. While Shaw is perhaps the most coveted coach on the market, he is believed to have a stronger interest in coaching the Clippers than the Nets.
Nets’ owner Mikhail Prokhorov is not afraid of making headlines and hiring Kidd within two weeks of his retirement would certainly raise some eyebrows. Brooklyn is known to want a “fresh face” as their coach and Kidd possesses both the star power and resume on the court to suggest he would make for a great coach.
One legitimate concern for the team is whether Kidd can overcome his inexperience to lead a Nets team that is built to win now.
Bird uninterested in Kings position
According to Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee, Larry Bird has taken himself out of contention for the Kings’ general manager position.
Bird, who recently met with Kings’ owner Vivek Ranadive about the position, was said to have been mildly interested in the job.
Bird was the biggest name on Ranadive’s wish list. However, the 56-year-old legend has an open invitation to regain his position atop Indiana’s front office and presumably prefers the Pacers’ position to the Kings’.
Ranadive’s list of potential suitors for the position now ranges from executives with experience in running a team like Mike Dunleavy and Chris Wallace to former players with no experience such as TNT cohorts Chris Webber and Kenny Smith.
Patrick Ewing named Charlotte Bobcats’ associate head coach
On the same day that it was reported that Jason Kidd might be getting a head coaching job within two weeks of his retirement, another basketball legend who has been coveting a head coaching job for eleven years will again have to settle for a position as an assistant.
Longtime rivals Patrick Ewing and Michael Jordan are teaming up for the first time since Space Jam, Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Ewing will join Jordan’s Bobcats as the associate head coach and top assistant to the recently hired Steve Clifford. Clifford and Ewing worked together as assistants for both Jeff and Stan Van Gundy in Houston and Orlando, respectively. They have built a strong rapport with each other over the years.
Ewing sat out last season after working the previous eight seasons as an assistant. He is credited with developing Yao Ming and Dwight Howard. Ewing interviewed for the Bobcats’ head coaching vacancy in 2012 but lost out on the job to Mike Dunlap.
Mike Malone reportedly wanted Ewing to be his top assistant in Sacramento but Ewing preferred to work with Clifford.
