Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As the Finals continue, we’ll keep you updated every evening. What’s happening today?
Here’s the latest from around the league:
Parker “ready to go” for Game 4
According to Dan McCarney of Spurs Nation, Tony Parker was quick to answer questions about his status for tonight’s game.
“I’ll be ready to go,” Parker told the media in three consecutive answers.
Parker strained his right hamstring in the Game 3 and went to the locker room early in the second half to have the injury examined. Though he was cleared to return by the medical staff, Parker played just over a minute in the second half. An MRI on the hamstring yesterday revealed that he sustained a Grade 1 strain, the least severe strain possible.
When asked what he expected from Parker tonight, Gregg Popovich said:
“Same as any other player. I want him to do his job.”
Meanwhile, Game 3 hero Gary Neal spoke happily about Parker’s return for Game 4:
“He’s one of the best players in the NBA,” Neal said. “At times, especially when he’s going, he’s pretty much our entire offense. We pretty much feed off him. That’s a big brick off our shoulders.”
Doc Rivers open to other coaching opportunities, likes Clippers
Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald reports that Doc Rivers is open to the idea of coaching for another team next season and ESPN’s Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne say that the Clippers are at the top of his list.
Provided that the Celtics receive compensation for his departure, Rivers would consider other jobs:
“Rivers is also said to be intrigued now by some of the high profile jobs that are — or could be — available. According to one source, it’s fair to assume he would want to be more than just the coach were he to move on, gaining some measure of control over player personnel in the process.”
Los Angeles is looking to make a big hire to entice Chris Paul into re-signing and Rivers would reportedly supplant Brian Shaw and Byron Scott at the top of the team’s wish list if he were to become available.
The Clippers have not yet reached out to Boston for permission to speak with Rivers but are expected to do so soon.
Rivers will reportedly decide on his plans for next season in the coming days.
“Look,” one source told Bulpett, “something’s got to happen with this soon. Nobody wants to put anyone else in a bad situation.”
Mike Miller might start Game 4
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Erik Spoelstra is strongly considering inserting Mike Miller into the Heat’s starting lineup for tonight’s Game 4.
Miami has struggled for offense in the Finals and Miller has been, perhaps, the team’s most consistent player since returning to the rotation in the Eastern Conference finals.
Miller is 10-of-11 shooting on three pointers in the Finals and is shooting 50 percent from three for the entire postseason.
If he does start tonight, he will likely replace his former college roommate, Udonis Haslem, in the lineup.
The Spurs have conscientiously packed the paint this Finals in an effort to minimize driving lanes for LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. With Miller on the court, however, the Heat gain better floor spacing and keep the Spurs honest on the perimeter.
