SAN ANTONIO — They were a beauty to behold. They were a beast to behold. You sat there watching Game 4, a night of precision and perfection from the Miami Heat, and you couldn’t keep the thought out of your head — you were watching one of the greatest teams of all time.

Yes, that is asking too much. But they spoiled us in this game, too. How they can look so good, seemingly at the flip of a switch, is one of the characteristics of this team that can never be fully explained.
It’s almost like they know they can jack their Ferrari up to 210 mph when they want to, but they only red-line it when they absolutely must. Why is that? (There is no good answer).
Which leads us to the biggest question of all — which Miami Heat team will show up on Sunday night when we begin the best 5-night (or 3-night, if this ends in 6) stretch of the postseason, the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat playing a best-of-3 for the title.
“We’re not going to win this series if myself, Chris and LeBron don’t show up to play on a consistent basis,” Wade said after the 109-93 victory. “So tonight was one of the best performances that we all had in the playoffs together at the same time, being aggressive from start to finish, and hopefully that’s what we can see for the next three games.
They are maddening, no? If they can play this perfectly once, why can’t they do it every time — or come close — like they did back during their 27-game winning streak, back before things got too easy for them with playoff matchups against a Milwaukee Bucks team with a losing record and a Chicago Bulls team running on fumes and running without Derrick Rose, their best player.
We saw them peak when they needed to against Indiana last round, and we saw the Pacers succumb to the pressure of a Game 7 when the Heat didn’t even need to play their best to move on to the final round. But we’ve never seen them operate quite at this level of efficiency, of perfection, of fine-tuned precision, in this series. Heck, it’s hard not to say that this was the best this Heat team had played, top to bottom, ever.
