Hello and welcome to the Evening News.
As free agency continues, we’ll keep you updated every night.
What’s happening today?
Paul George would have trouble turning down the Lakers
Paul George would have a difficult time turning down the Lakers in free agency next summer.
As it stands, George will be a restricted free agent in 2014 unless he can reach an extension with the Pacers before the season’s end.
George, a native of Los Angeles, grew up rooting for Kobe Bryant for the Lakers and has clearly thought about the idea of returning to Los Angeles.
“Of course it would be tough (to say no to Kobe),” George told ESPN Radio. “You’re talking about playing (at) home.”
The Lakers are projected to have enough cap space for at least one max contract next summer. Yesterday, reports indicated that the Lakers would target LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony first. George’s name will certainly enter the discussion if the Pacers fail to come to terms with him on an extension.
Still, for now, George is under the Pacers’ control. And according to George, that’s exactly how it should be.
“My heart is still in Indiana … I’m still a Pacer, and hopefully I remain a Pacer,” George said when asked about his upcoming free agency. “I’m happy where I’m at.”
Even if George did sign a Lakers’ offer sheet next summer, the Pacers would likely match it.
Aldridge’s camp met with Blazers brass to discuss trade
Comcast’s Chris Haynes reports that Lamarcus Aldridge’s representatives recently met with the Portland Trail Blazers’ front office to discuss possible trade scenarios.
As it stands right now, Blazers’ GM Neil Olshey is in no rush to grant Aldridge’s trade request. Though the team has floated Aldridge’s name out to executives from around the league, their asking price appears to be too high at the moment.
The Blazers are currently targeting Joakim Noah, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Al Horford, and Anthony Davis.
All of the aforementioned players are similar, if not greater, talents to Aldridge. The obvious difference, however, is that they are all happy where they are. With Aldridge wanting out, the Blazers have less trade leverage around the league.
With two years and $30 million left on the all star forward’s contract, Portland still has time to find the right deal.
Expect Aldridge’s name to reappear next February at the trade deadline.
Baron Davis attempting to return to NBA
According to MSG’s Alan Hahn, former star point guard Baron Davis is attempting to make a comeback to the NBA.
Davis, who has been working for the Knicks for the past season, has been rehabbing his knees and plans to work himself into NBA shape by training camp.
“My whole thing is to get in the best shape of my life and by September or October be ready to showcase my talent and try out for whoever I need to try out for,” said Davis. “I think the most important thing is being in shape.”
At 34, Davis’ days as a starter are probably behind him. However, in his stint with the Knicks in 2011-2012, Davis proved himself to be a competent backup.
If Davis impresses in workouts, expect teams to look at him as a viable backup point guard.
Some possible destinations for Davis could be Houston, New Orleans, and New York.
Houston’s James Harden considers Davis to be a mentor and close friend. Meanwhile, both New Orleans and New York have needs for a backup point guard and are cities that Davis has played in before.
