What’s happening today?
Knicks re-sign Kenyon Martin
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks have re-signed Kenyon Martin for one year at the veteran’s minimum.
The Knicks signed Martin last February to add depth to their injury depleted frontline. In 18 games, Martin averaged 7.2 points and 5.3 rebounds.
The former top pick will likely serve as the Knicks’ primary backup center. Though slightly undersized, Martin has proven to be a strong defensive presence on the interior. Moreover, despite being 35-years-old, Martin still showed flashes of elite athleticism last season.
With Martin back, the Knicks now have three remaining roster spots available. Don’t be surprised if they leave one or two of those spots unfilled as they enter training camp.
Chandler Parsons led Rockets’ recruiting efforts for Dwight Howard
Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears reports that Chandler Parsons played an integral role in bringing Dwight Howard to Houston.
“I think I had a big impact,” Parsons said at USA Basketball’s mini-camp. “The first thing he said at the press conference was that, ‘You guys should thank Chandler Parsons because he is a big reason why I am here.'”
Howard and Parsons originally met when the former was an all star center for the Orlando Magic and the latter was starring in college for the Florida Gators.
Now, both are represented by agent Dan Fegan and have become close friends.
“Obviously, he loves the team, [general manager] Daryl Morey, coach [Kevin] McHale and all that. But I think I just gave him that comfort that you got one of your boys here who is also a key part to the team, a young guy. And we can grow on this for a long time.”
According to reports, Parsons was texting Howard nearly every day after the season to get updates from the big man on his free agency plans. When Howard started warming to the idea of playing in Houston, Parsons jumped on the opportunity to entice Howard even further:
“I told him how good I thought we could be,” Parsons said. “If you add him with me, James [Harden] and Jeremy [Lin], Omer Asik … [and] what better coach to play for than a top-50 NBA player of all time in McHale? With “Dream” [Hakeem Olajuwon], Yao [Ming] and Ralph [Sampson] and all these centers that had success in Houston, I think it was a no-brainer for him.”
Carmelo Anthony dismisses Lakers rumors
Despite an ESPN report from last week that stated Los Angeles was planning an all out pursuit for Carmelo Anthony next summer, the Knicks’ superstar appears to be less excited about the idea than the Lakers’ fans are.
In a hurried interview with TMZ.com, Anthony was asked if he could see himself playing in a “purple and gold outfit.”
Anthony quickly responded, “Uh, I doubt it,” Anthony answered. “It’s not a outfit, though.”
When the reporter said he was reading between the lines and that he could see Anthony starring for the Lakers, Anthony again shot down rumor:
“I don’t think you should read between the lines,” Anthony replied. “I don’t think you should do that. It’s not good to read between the lines.”
For those wondering, Anthony would have to sacrifice more than $30 million dollars over the value of his next contract if he were to turn down a max contract from the Knicks in favor of a max contract from the Lakers.
Uh, I doubt it too.
