6. J.J. Redick’s Alleged Abortion Contract
When people think of J.J. Redick, the first thing that comes to mind is his ability to knock down 3s with ease (excepting his brief stint with the Milwaukee Bucks).
Well, as of July, he can officially add his name as one of the latest scandalous NBA players. According to Media Take Out, Redick and ex-girlfriend Vanessa Lopez drew up an abortion contract in 2007. Per terms of this “contract”, if Redick violated his part he would have to pay her $25,000, which is apparently the going rate of a life these days.
While Redick has denied the reports, this certainly took much of the attention away from the fact that he is now a member of the Los Angeles Clippers.
7. The Philadelphia 76ers still don’t have a coach.
There are so many things that can be said about the future of the 76ers and their direction (or lack thereof), but unfortunately that’s an issue best saved for another column. Instead let’s focus on the fact that the NBA season has concluded, the draft has come and gone, Summer League is behind us and the Sixers are still without a coach.
While many are optimistic about Sam Hinkie’s plans as GM, not having a coach for this long doesn’t provide a sense of comfort. Even if the Sixers do intend to tank the season in hopes of winning the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes, they could at least pretend they’re preparing to play this year.
At this point it’s obvious they weren’t looking for the best coach available, or they would have acted with more haste. Of course, Hinkie deserves some latitude, but as of right now perhaps it would be best if they at least pretended to care about the immediate future.
8. Nate Robinson signs a baby…kind of.
Yes, Nate Robinson did sign a baby while attending a Bobcats/Bucks Summer League game.
No he didn’t actually sign the baby itself, as he opted to sign the child’s shirt instead. Even still, of all things to sign, that was pretty peculiar, especially while the baby was still wearing it.
Something even stranger than that was the fact that he was attending a Bobcats/Bucks Summer League game.
9. John Wall signs $80 million max contract with the Washington Wizards.
This isn’t about whether or not John Wall deserved this contract, or will justify deserving it in the future. There are others that have already debated both sides of that spectrum to death (Case in point is this column from colleague Shlomo Sprung). This is about the Wizards being the Wizards, which might not be such a strange thing after all.
While many believe Wall will eventually live up to the potential that is undoubtedly there, the Wizards in this case had all the leverage in the world. He would have been a restricted free agent next summer, and the Wizards would have been able to match any offer that came his way, and probably for significantly less. Yes, Wall is definitely the face of that franchise, but this move just reminds us that the more things change, the more the Wizards’ front office will always stay the same.
10. Dennis Rodman wants to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
When it comes to Dennis Rodman, there may not be a list long enough to detail the strange things he has said and done over his career. The Hall of Fame player recently told Sports Illustrated that he should be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. In fact we’ll let him plead his own case in his words from that interview.
“Why it’s been left to me to smooth things over, I don’t know. Dennis Rodman, of all people. Keeping us safe is really not my job; it’s [President Barack Obama’s] job. But I’ll tell you this: If I don’t finish in the top three for the next Nobel Peace Prize, something’s seriously wrong.”
OK, Worm. Good luck with that.
