Every year, NBA rookies enter the Rookie Transition Program—a mandatory multi-day seminar with interactive workshops, counseling sessions and guest appearances from current and former NBA athletes.
As with anything, there are rules that must be adhered to when in attendance. Sometimes, however, those rules are broken.
In 2008, Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were thrown out of the program—and subsequently fined $20,000 each—for getting caught with women and marijuana in their hotel room.
This year, the lot fell to Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Shabazz Muhammad, as SB Nation’s Mike Prada explains.

As inferred, Muhammad was caught sneaking a woman into his hotel room.
Whatever. Shabazz’s female guest probably lied about her age to get in anyway.

Muhammad will have to attend and complete the Rookie Transition Program next year with the 2014 crop of rookies.
By forcing him to go back to the Rookie Premier next year, the NBA is making Shabazz pretend he’s a year younger than he actually is.

Prada wasn’t alone. Other writers also took jibes at Muhammad.
Shabazz Muhammad is SOOOOOOOO grounded.

Worse sin: Shabazz having a woman in his hotel room, or Sally Draper bringing boys to the boarding school?
— Zach Lowe (@ZachLowe_NBA) August 7, 2013
In this instance, “Sally Draper bring boys to the boarding school” is a reference to popular AMC show Mad Men. Sally (Kiernan Shipka), the 14 year old daughter of main character Don Draper (Jon Hamm), brought a boy to an all-girls boarding school and got drunk.
Being that they are merely kids, I will say that Sally’s situation is worse.
Shabazz Muhammad just became the first NBA rookie to successfully solve the Rookie Program’s Kobayashi Maru test.

The Kobayashi Maru test, for those of you who aren’t versed in Star Trek lore, is a simulated test presenting a situation that has a no-win scenario.
In this case, Muhammad is in a transition program to aid in helping him adjust to NBA life, wherein groupies constantly bombard players, and he gets caught taking a woman to his room. For many men in this world, that might be perceived as a win.
The idea behind the Rookie Transition Program is to provide young players with the information and resources that will help them to make smart decisions as they get acclimated to the NBA lifestyle.
If Muhammad hasn’t proven that he is capable of adjusting to the NBA lifestyle yet, at least he’ll have next year.
