What’s happening in the NBA today?
The Lakers front office spoke publicly about Kobe Bryant’s rehabilitation and the Celtics traded their first round pick from last year to Memphis.
Kupchak talks about Kobe Bryant
The Lakers’ biggest mystery entering the season is the status of Kobe Bryant.
“Kobe is a big question mark,” said General Manager Mitch Kupchak to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio on Thursday. “We’re very optimistic. He’s getting treatment every day. He’s in the facility right now, but he hasn’t been on a basketball court.”
Bryant turns 35 on August 23 and is coming back from a torn achilles, one of the most serious injuries a basketball player can sustain.
Earlier in the month, Bryant told reporters that he has “shattered” the ordinary recovery timetable of 6-9 months for achilles rehabilitation.
Still, Kupchak was cautious with his word selection in talking to reporters.
“Our best player, one of the best players to ever play the game, is recovering from an Achilles’ tendon tear,” Kupchak said. “You have a player who is up in age and just had a devastating injury.”
Bryant is entering the last season of his contract and will be eligible for free agency next season. Kupchak, however, sees a healthy Bryant staying in Los Angeles for years to come.
“If he can play at a high level, I can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be [re-signing],” Kupchak said. “There really has been no discussions beyond next year.”
Celtics trade Fab Melo to Grizzlies
As reported earlier, the Boston Celtics have traded Fab Melo to the the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Donte Green.
Melo, drafted 22 overall by the Celtics last year, disappointed in his only season in Boston. The true 7-footer toiled in the D-League for much of the year. He averaged 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game for the Maine Red Claws.
The Celtics completed the trade as an effective salary dump of Melo’s $1.3 million contract. Green’s $1 million contract, meanwhile, is non guaranteed.
While Melo has undeniably strong defensive instincts, his attitude has kept him from reaching his full potential. As a sophomore at Syracuse, Melo was ruled academically ineligible for the NCAA Tournament after Syracuse earned a number one seed.
