4. Will Carlos Boozer rebound from his down season? Boozer’s time with the Bulls has been marked by loads of team success and lots of fan frustration with his individual play. He has trouble defending – particularly in help situations – and his struggles are more glaring because backup Taj Gibson is one of the league’s very best defensive big men.
If that were the only trouble for Boozer, as it was prior to last season, it wouldn’t be so bad as he has traditionally been a very useful player despite his defensive limitations. Unfortunately, Boozer’s scoring efficiency also fell off greatly last season.
After posting respectable true shooting percentages of 54.2 percent and 54.9 percent and per-36 scoring averages of 19.8 points and 18.3 points in his first two seasons with the club, Boozer struggled badly last season and saw his true shooting percentage and per-36 scoring dip to 51 percent and 18.1 points, respectively. Boozer should see a bit of a bounce-back with Rose returning to take some of the defensive focus off of him. But it remains to be seen whether this will happen, as what little athleticism Boozer once had continues to slip.
5. How will Mike Dunleavy fit in? Dunleavy was Chicago’s only significant roster addition this offseason and figures to fit in perfectly. He excels at moving off the ball, using pindowns and running his man through screens to get open 3-point looks. Those are just the sorts of actions he’ll be asked to execute in Thibodeau’s flex offense.
Last season in Milwaukee, Dunleavy hit 42.8 percent of his 3-pointers playing alongside Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings. In a more disciplined offensive system with better surrounding talent, Dunleavy figures to see even more open looks, which is bad news for Bulls opponents.
Dunleavy should also be another capable ballhandler and spot playmaker off the bench. He should quickly earn Thibodeau’s trust, which should let Deng finally get some rest.
