The Wizards also drafted their small forward of the future this summer in the 6-8 Porter. Teams don’t often spend the third overall pick on a player they plan to sit. Additional minutes exist backing up Beal, but that’s not the ideal position for any of the three threes.
Factor in Ariza is entering a contract year, Webster’s injury history and Porter making the college-to-pro adjustment, playing time could fall in all sorts of ways.
4. Can Al Harrington solve Washington’s remaining issues? The Wizards entered the offseason with the following on their wish list: Bench scoring, stretch-4, veterans over kids. That’s why it is legitimate to view the 33-year-old Harrington as a 3-for-1 signing.
The 6-9 forward with post and perimeter skills is exactly the right guy for Washington’s roster in this small ball era – assuming he is healthy.
Last season, the 16-year-veteran played only 10 games with Orlando due to a staph infection in his right knee. Since he signed a one-year deal, the risk is minimal. The reward, especially on nights when the starters can’t buy a basket and Wittman wants to spread the floor, could be a real playoff high.
5. Will the young frontcourt options improve or fall further down the rotation? It is conceivable, if not probable, that four of Washington’s former first-round selections will not log significant or regular minutes this season.
As the third big behind Nene and Okafor, Seraphin’s path is the clearest, but the 6-9 wide body rarely played to his size last season. In response, he often received Wittman’s wrath. Trevor Booker’s energy and hops make him worthy of a sizeable role. But his constant run of injuries make him a source of frustration.
Positional nomads Jan Vesely and Chris Singleton have confidence and scoring issues. Each of the four has two to three years of NBA experience. Without significant development, they are each about one season away from finding a new home.
