3. How much of an impact does Nate Robinson make? Robinson was Denver’s biggest free agent signing. He is likely going to be the sixth man who will provide a spark plug when needed. However, there already is a young, small and fast point guard in front of him in Lawson.
It is hard to imagine Robinson playing more than 10 or 12 minutes a night. His impact – which was obvious in Chicago’s playoff run last season – is going to be overblown this season. It wouldn’t shock me if Robinson only averages seven points and three assists.
4- Will the Nuggets make the playoffs? It may seem like a silly question, but in a deep Western Conference where multiple teams got better this offseason, taking a step back could send them out of the postseason.
Among the teams who reached the playoffs last season but may not return this season, I would guess the Los Angeles Lakers would be at the top of the list. But the Nuggets would be second. They lost Iguodola and Brewer, and replaced them with average players who play other positions.
Adam Formal elaborates on this point very well in an article he wrote about the biggest free agent moves.
“It’s not like Denver is replacing one All-Star with another,” he wrote. “Instead, the Nuggets are trying to fill in the holes left by an All-Star and an emerging defensive stud with a role-playing center, a great sixth man and another marginal role player.”
5- Will anyone on the roster transform into a star in 2013? The Nuggets are loaded with young talent on the
cusp of becoming an All-Star or superstar. Guys like Lawson and Kenneth Faried are extremely talented players. They are both on the verge of becoming franchise players. Is Shaw’s new offense the way they make the jump?
The one thing the Nuggets lack is a superstar. They haven’t had one since trading Carmelo Anthony. To win a championship in the NBA, you need at least two guys who qualify as superstars. Despite an extremely deep roster, the Nuggets don’t even have one.
It is their biggest problem, and one that is hard to address through free agency. Development will be the key.
