Tight Ends for Week 3
The two safest plays at the tight end position are Jimmy Graham/$14647/NOS and Julius Thomas/$10722/DEN. Thomas has settled into the top TE spot in Peyton Manning’s/DEN high-octane passing offense. Look for him to get plenty of touches this week against the Raiders. Jimmy Graham has established himself as Drew Brees‘/NOS most reliable receiver and should be his top target against the Cardinals.
If you don’t like paying a high price for safety, I recommend Brandon Pettigrew/$4340/DET or Jordan Reed/$4443/WAS. We know two things about the Lions: the first is that Matthew Stafford will throw the ball a lot; the second is that the opposing defense will try their best to contain Calvin Johnson/DET. This could result in Pettigrew/DET getting targets over the middle. Reed/WAS is the riskier choice but also has a better chance to find the end zone, as he is becoming an important element in the Redskins’ red-zone offense.
It worked well in week 2, so why not go to the well with Greg Olsen/$9736/CAR again. The Panthers-Giants figures to be a shootout and Olsen is in line for plenty of targets.
Patriots star Rob Gronkowski/$11337/NEP might not be ready yet, but even if he is he won’t get a regular dose of snaps – please avoid. Vernon Davis/$9709/SFN hasn’t practiced this week but has promised to be ready for game time: he is fair value at best. Martellus Bennett/$9299/CHI had a great game against Minnesota and I expect him to come back to earth this week. Owen Daniels/$9448/HOU could have an uptick in targets due to the questionable health of Andre Johnson/HOU.
Defenses for Week 3
The hot pick among defenses is the Seattle Seahawks/$9850. Without question, they have been the most impressive defensive team of the season by far. Better still, they have the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars visiting. The Jags have already replaced their starting QB with Chad Henne/JAX. Their top running back, Maurice Jones-Drew/JAX, is dealing with a foot injury. The Seahawks’ price is steep but a monster defensive performance is on the cards.
In the mid-range, my top play is the Minnesota Vikings/$5642. The Vikes play the Browns, who have to be a little demoralized by the trade of star RB Trent Richardson/IND. The trade leaves Cleveland without an established running back. To pour salt on the wound, QB Brandon Weeden/CLE has a thumb injury and has been replaced by the relatively unknown Brian Hoyer/CLE. Also noteworthy are the Jets/$4522, who host the Bills.
The cheap option might be best of all. The Lions/$1650 face an under-achieving Redskins squad. Apart from garbage time, the RG3-led Washington offense has looked out of sorts. Though they play the Patriots on the road, the low cost Buccaneers/$953 are very tempting, as the New England offense isn’t even close to full strength.
I’ve given you a good start towards building all-conquering lineups. All that remains is to put your fantasy football skills to the test and register for the qualifiers as often as you can. I’ll be back before Sunday’s kickoff with more thoughts on this week’s games. Good luck to all!
