In today’s news, Shaquille O’Neal has purchased a stake in the Kings’ new ownership group, the NBA and player’s union remain far apart in discussions for HGH testing reform, and Gilbert Arenas will head back to China rather than audition for the Clippers in training camp.
Shaq buys stake in Kings organization
USA Today’s Sam Amick reports that Shaquille O’Neal has purchased a minority stake of the Sacramento Kings’ organization.
O’Neal plans to meet with players and coaches within the organization before meeting with franchise cornerstone, Demarcus Cousins, for dinner tonight.
“What interested me in this deal is the new vision, the new Kings, the new everything,” said O’Neal. “I’ve always wanted to be part of something like this. … It’s going to be great.”
The surefire Hall of Famer developed quite a knack for giving the Sacramento fans nightmares in his playing days. O’Neal’s Lakers of the late 1990s and early 2000s defeated the Chris Webber-led Kings in three consecutive grueling postseason contests.
O’Neal famously called the Kings the “Queens” prior to 2002-2003 season.
For O’Neal, the investment in Sacramento is completely logical:
“Worst is at the bottom, which means you can’t get no worser,” he said of the Kings’ position in the league. “There’s no such thing as worser, which means we can only get better. And we will get better. Once that new arena comes, once that new downtown is up, once we have a conversation with the players and get everybody to step up, they’ll be knocking on the door.”
NBA and players’ union far apart in HGH testing negotiations
Officials from both the NBA and the players’ union met in New York earlier in the month to discuss the league’s testing policy. Still, According to CBS Sports’ Ken Berger, talks between the two sides remain far apart.
“Nothing is anywhere near being agreed to,” according to a person familiar with the talks.
The two sides appear to be far apart on specific issues within the call for testing reformation. Specifically, the sides have differing opinions on the reliability of blood screening and the disciplinary procedures affiliated with a failed test.
While the two sides continue to negotiate, officials speculate the gap between the parties may be too large for an agreement to be reached in time for the start of the regular season.

Arenas chooses China over NBA
HipHollywood.com reports that Gilbert Arenas will not attend Clippers’ training camp and will instead look to play in the Chinese Basketball Association for the upcoming season.
Arenas worked out for the Clippers over the summer and reportedly looked great. As we discussed last week, rumors persisted throughout the NBA that the Clippers were strongly interested in extending a preseason invitation to Arenas.
Arenas, however, is more interested in playing in China next season for a completely unexpected reason: his family.
“With China, I get to go and still play and then I can get back home and spend more time with the kids. I get to be home in February and enjoy the family, I don’t need the NBA money, I have enough of it. Now it’s about spending time with the family and the kids,” Arenas said, referring to the CBA’s short season.
