NBA All-Star Weekend 2015 will be in New York, with the marquee events split between Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The league made the announcement Wednesday with most of the bigwigs on hand. In attendance at the Industria Superstudio in Manhattan were New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Commissioner David Stern, Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, Knicks owner James Dolan and Barclays Center owner Bruce Ratner.
“New York City is the basketball capital of the world and the sport’s biggest stage,” Bloomberg said in a statement.
Not present was Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov. The team was represented by Irina Pavlova, the president of Onexim Sports and Entertainment and Prokhorov’s gal about town.
The preliminary events on Friday and Saturday – the Rising Stars Challenge, All-Star Celebrity Game, Shooting Stars, Skills Challenge, Three-Point Contest and Slam Dunk Contest – will be at the Barclays Center, home of the Nets.
The 64th All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 15 will be at Madison Square Garden, home of the Knicks. “The World’s Most Famous Arena” last hosted an All-Star Game in 1998.
The league did not announce the locations for media availability, the Jam Session, the D-League All-Star Game and other events associated with All-Star Weekend. To get from Madison Square Garden to the Barclays Center takes less than 30 minutes on the Nos. 2 or 3 trains.
Last year, the Nets moved into the Barclays Center with an upgraded roster, breathing life into a long-dormant regional rivalry. Their games against the Knicks were battles for NBA supremacy in New York.
There has been a feud simmering between the Knicks and Nets this summer, with words going back and forth from J.R. Smith and Raymond Felton of the Knicks and newly acquired Paul Pierce of the Nets. Stern even met with Dolan and Prokhorov and asked both men to keep things civil.
The Knicks and Nets are expected to battle for the Atlantic Division title this season. Their first meeting is Dec. 5 in Brooklyn.
