The Spanish Olympic committee couldn’t have elected a better spokesperson than Lakers forward Pau Gasol. The seven-footer has been actively promoting his country in an attempt to land the 2020 games. In a battle with Tokyo and Istanbul to host sport’s biggest event, Madrid fell short after the International Olympic Committee selected Tokyo in secret voting as the winning city. Gasol was an instrumental part of Madrid’s bid over the past week but was defeated Saturday. Thanks to all that have supported @Madrid2020ES .

SH Blog: Rodman visits North Korea again; Pierce was the catalyst in Celtics-Nets trade
Hey everyone, I’m back in action this weekend. And what a story to welcome me back, too. A while back, Dennis Rodman visited Kim Jong-Un in North Korea, and this week, he went back. Once you think about it, this shouldn’t be all that surprising: like his father, Jong-Un is a big fan of the NBA, especially the 90’s Bulls (and also a big fan of looking at things). And the only 90’s Bull weird enough to want to go
Tweet of the Night: Shabazz Muhammad shows dunking skills to Adidas employees
In terms of making his first headline as a professional athlete, the summer was mostly a forgettable one for Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Shabazz Muhammad. The athletic guard was sent home from the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program in August for violating a rule and has mostly stayed out of the limelight since. On Thursday, though, Muhammad got to show some of the folks over at Adidas what he is capable of on the court. Here is a clip of him showing off
SH Blog: Is Derrick Williams Safe In Minnesota? Could Durant Leave OKC? Hakeem Pays Tribute to Kobe
As glamorous as it may seem, the NBA can be a tough place to make it for certain players. Being in the league alone justifies your level of talent. But it takes more than talent to survive. Just ask J.R. Smith and Lamar Odom, two of the more talented players in the league who cannot seem to get out of their own way. While it may not be drugs that are bringing Minnesota’s Derrick Williams down, the former No. 2 overall draft pick
Tweet of the Day: Dawn Staley Recognized for Hall of Fame Nod
Michael Jordan once said, “I believe greatness is an evolutionary process that changes and evolves era to era.” Dawn Staley exemplifies that phrase. In her career as a basketball player, she attained to levels of greatness that many others could only dream of. In college, at Virginia, she was honored as the consensus National Player of the Year twice (1991, ’92). As a WNBA player, she was a six-time All-Star. As an Olympian, she was a three-time Gold medal winner. Now, as a
Evening News: J.R Smith suspended five games; Rodman meets with Kim Jong Un again; Rondo return date uncertain
On a slow news day, you have to give thanks for people like J.R. Smith and Dennis Rodman. They break up the mundane — not that the mundane has to be boring (Case in point is the latest of our team previews, this one on the Oklahoma City Thunder. For all published team previews, click here.) Here is the lowdown: Smith gets five game ban J.R Smith has been suspended five games by the NBA for violating the league’s anti-drug policy. Due to the length
Knicks’ J.R. Smith suspended 5 games
New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been suspended five games by the NBA for violating the anti-drug program. The NBA made the announcement Friday, continuing a string of off-court news for Smith, the reigning Sixth Man Award winner. Two days after winning the Sixth Man Award, Smith was suspended one game for elbowing Boston Celtics guard Jason Terry in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series. Upon his return, he shot just 29 percent (34-of-117) – including 13-of-50 from 3-point range
Five Things to Watch: Oklahoma City Thunder
We’re entering Year Six of Thundermania here in Oklahoma City, and the level of expectation surrounding the team is as high as it has ever been. But with that expectation comes a certain degree of uncertainty. After all the years of hearing about how the Thunder were an organization based around a true “team” concept, fans are now coming to accept that the Thunder are a two-headed horse. There’s simply no way that this team could hoist a championship banner without a
