In today’s news, one legend said good bye to the a formal role within the NBA for good while another legend opened up to why he returned after a one-year hiatus. Doug Collins ended all speculation of an eventual return to coaching and Larry Bird admitted that he was surprised to return to the Pacers after such little time away.
Collins done coaching
In an interview with ESPN, Doug Collins reflected on his time in Philadelphia and officially closed the door on a return to coaching in the NBA in the future.
When asked if he would consider returning to the sidelines some day, Collins responded defiantly:
“No, I’m through coaching. I said it when I went to Philly. That was my last spot. Like I said, it was a circle of life for me. I was at a coaching clinic the other day at Illinois State talking about how difficult coaching has become. There’s so much criticism and you’re always under the microscope. It’s a tough, tough thing. There’s so much money involved because these franchises are worth hundreds of millions of dollars — and the coach, whether it’s right or wrong, has to be in the spotlight all the time. That’s just the way the situation is.”
Collins led four different teams over his 11-year coaching career. He reached the Eastern Conference finals with the Bulls in 1988-1989.
His son, Chris, is now the head coach at Northwestern University.
“But I knew when Chris got a head-coaching job, I knew I’d want to be there to watch him grow as a coach,” said Collins. “He’s got a great spot at Northwestern now and I don’t want to miss it. When I got fired in Chicago, I took seven years off so I could watch all of Chris’ and [daughter] Kelly’s high school games. I saw Chris up until his senior year at Duke and my daughter until her senior year of high school when I went to Detroit. That’s time you can’t get back. And I’ve got five incredible grandchildren now that I don’t want to miss out on.”
Larry Bird surprised to be back so soon
CBS Sports’ Ken Berger reports Larry Bird didn’t always plan to return the Pacers’ front office. In fact, Bird is still surprised that he’s back after such little time away.
Bird spent last season away from the league due to a health problem. He returned this summer and led the team to a highly active offseason.
“I never dreamed I’d be back, especially so quick,” Bird said. “But I thought that’s the best thing that I’ve done in a long time — get away from it, refresh, watch the team play.”
When asked about the difficulty of leaving the team last summer, Bird responded by saying he left comfortably, knowing his team was set for a strong season:
“It wasn’t hard. I knew we had a good team, that the team was pretty well set.”
