The D-League is holding its draft tonight at 7 p.m. EDT at NBA headquarters, and there are some pretty interesting names.
Especially when it comes to last names, that is.
Let’s start with Boozer, as in Charles Boozer. A 25-year-old guard out of Iowa State, he is the younger brother of Chicago Bulls forward Carlos Boozer, and maybe one day he, too, will become a prime amnesty candidate after being overpaid throughout his career.
Hey, isn’t that what a majority of the players in the D-League aspire too? OK, maybe not the amnesty part. But the big contract? You bet.
Big name No. 2 is Harouna Mutombo, the younger cousin of Dikembe Mutombo — who treats him like a son. The younger Mutombo is a 6’5″ guard from Western Carolina. It is not known if he is a finger wagger.
There are five players with NBA experience in the D-League draft, and the most intriguing is Quincy Douby, the 19th overall pick of the 2006 draft who has been out of the NBA since 2009, playing in Lebanon and China ever since. Last season, he scored 75 points in a game for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls.
Here are the highlights from that game (the 75 points was a CBA record).
Other players with NBA experience include Ricky Davis, James Johnson, DeAndre Liggins and Salim Stoudamire.
A couple other notables:
- Aquille Carr – coming out of High School and using NBA D-League to get to the 2014 NBA Draft.
- Norvel Pelle – Last played for Los Angeles College Prep Academy, was 2013 NBA Draft eligible having not gone to college or played internationally since eligibility rules were instituted in 2005 … (Was a top 25 prospect coming out of HS in 2011, St. John’s and Iona didn’t work out).
Here is the link to the 170 (yes, 170!) players eligible to be drafted tonight.
No trades will be permitted during the Draft and only players signed to an NBA D-League Standard Player Contract are eligible to be selected. The first six rounds of the Draft are mandatory, while teams may opt not to select players in the seventh and eighth rounds.
