- The New Orleans Pelicans are retooling their bench: “The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that the team has signed Lou Amundson and Josh Childress, and has waived Lance Thomas and Arinze Onuaku. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not released. Amundson, a University of Nevada-Las Vegas product, appeared in 18 games with New Orleans last season and averaged 2.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 11.7 minutes of action. The 6’9” forward also spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Chicago Bulls last year. The veteran big holds career averages of 3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 12.9 minutes in over 308 games. Childress, a Stanford product, has appeared in 387 career games including 70 starts. The 6’8” seventh year player holds career averages of 9.2 points per game, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 26.9 minutes per game. Childress last appeared for the Brooklyn Nets in the 2012-13 season playing 14 games.”
- After his first start of the season last night, Andrew Bynum will miss two games due to a personal matter: “Cavaliers center Andrew Bynum has been excused from the team until Saturday in order to attend to a personal, family matter. Bynum, who made his first start of the season in Monday’s 96-81 loss at Chicago, will miss games at Minnesota on Wednesday and against Charlotte on Friday at The Q. He is expected to return to the team in time for Saturday’s game at Washington, at which time he likely will return to the starting lineup, provided he has no issues with his knees. The matter is unrelated to his own health or to comments he made last week in Philadelphia, where he discussed the difficulty of returning from his injuries and admitted he occasionally thinks about retiring.”
- Reports out of Miami are that LeBron is not happy with his teammates effort: “”It’s simple,” James said as the Heat prepared for Tuesday’s home game against the Milwaukee Bucks. “These first seven games, we’re playing like s— defensively. It’s that simple. We’re not a sugarcoat team. We came in and got right down to it. We’re terrible on defense, and we’ve got to change that.” James’ comments came on the heels of the Heat’s 111-110 loss Saturday to the Boston Celtics, who won on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Jeff Green after overcoming a four-point deficit in the final 3.6 seconds. The shot from Green capped a relentless performance by the Celtics, who took advantage of Miami’s lethargic defensive effort throughout the game. It’s already developing into a disturbing trend for the Heat, who are ranked first in the league in offensive efficiency but just 25th among the NBA’s 30 teams in defensive efficiency. Miami also ranks among the bottom third in the league in points allowed, yielding 100.9 per game.”
- SheridanHoops’ own Danny Schayes has insight on hazing in the NBA locker room: “When I read the articles trying to make sense of the situation I go from bewilderment to anger to head-scratching. I marvel as idiot reporters struggle to explain the actions of players by using societal norms while quoting textbook-writing psychologists. Each text, email, conversation and action is taken out of context and dissected. If you believe what you read, one player is either weak or strong. The other is either a racist ax murderer or a great teammate and friend. The absurdity of the coverage truly shows just how little understanding there is about sports on the most basic level. How do players interact and build that most elusive quality, a team? Let me let you in on a little fact that will explain why 90 percent of what you read about this situation is garbage.”
- Andrei Kirilenko will not make the Nets’ upcoming west coast trip: “Kirilenko has been a disaster this year due to the injury. He’s averaging six points and three rebounds on 42 percent shooting, and the Nets have been outscored by 6.4 points per 48 minutes with him on the floor. Defense was the biggest reason Kirilenko was brought on board, but with him on the floor, opponents have scored an insane 1.15 points per possession. Like I said, a disaster. Hopefully the time off will get him healthy and he can become a productive member of the team, and hopefully the Nets will rally without him. Mikhail Prokhorov doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who woud be cool with spending $100 million for disappointment.”
- No need to panic, but Derrick Rose is officially day-to-day: “Rose suffered the injury on a drive with just more than three minutes remaining in Monday’s victory over the Cavaliers. He played one more possession before coach Tom Thibodeau called a 20-second timeout to replace him. Rose said he hopes to play Friday in Toronto, but the Bulls have been cautious regarding injuries during this season. The Bulls, who had Tuesday off, face the Pacers at home on Saturday. In other news, sources said the Bulls worked out shooter Reggie Williams for a second time Tuesday. Williams led the nation in scoring twice while at Virginia Military Institute. He has played in 177 games with the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Bobcats and also logged time in the NBA Development League.”
