22 NBA teams were in action in 11 games on Friday, Nov. 15. There were record-setting crowd reactions, the preservation of an undefeated record and injuries to two of the most high-profile point guards in the NBA.
Here’s everything you need to know.
1. The Indiana Pacers moved to 9-0 with a 104-77 decimation of the Milwaukee Bucks. Roy Hibbert led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks, and Paul George scored 22 points to provide supporting fire.
Indiana is the first team to start the season at 9-0 since the 2002-03 Dallas Mavericks.
2. The Brooklyn Nets defeated the Phoenix Suns 110-108 in overtime behind yet another display of clutch heroics by Joe Johnson. Johnson now has five buzzer-beaters since 2007-08, which is the highest number in the NBA.
Unfortunately, Brooklyn lost Deron Williams to a sprained left ankle.
3. Derrick Rose missed the Chicago Bulls’ game on Friday due to a hamstring injury. The injury is of a mild nature, but this does come after Rose missed the entire 2012-13 regular season due to a leg-related injury.
The Bulls defeated the Toronto Raptors 96-80. That didn’t prevent DeMar DeRozan from scoring 37 points on 13-of-22 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
4. The Miami Heat out-dueled the Dallas Mavericks 110-104. LeBron James scored 39 points on 14-of-18 shooting, and Dwyane Wade picked up 17 points, eight assists, five rebounds and a career-high eight steals.
Dirk Nowitzki countered with 28 points, Vince Carter scored 21 and Monta Ellis tallied 20 in Dallas’ defeat.
5. Remember how I told you that Derrick Favors of the Utah Jazz is worth the money he received this past offseason? He torched Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs for 20 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and three steals in 37 minutes of action.
Behind 17 points from Boris Diaw, the Spurs managed to win 91-82 over the Jazz.
6. Andre Drummond dropped 15 points and 18 rebounds, and DeMarcus Cousins tallied 26 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks as the Detroit Pistons outlasted the Sacramento Kings 97-90. For all of the talk about the center position being dead—it isn’t—Cousins and Drummond are doing an excellent job of bringing it back to life.
7. Jeff Teague scored a career-high 33 points and added 10 assists to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 113-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Evan Turner countered with 27 points and Tony Wroten Jr. scored 22, but it wasn’t enough.
The future of the Eastern Conference is bright.
8. Interior studs dueled at TD Garden, with LaMarcus Aldridge leading the Portland Trail Blazers past Jared Sullinger and the Boston Celtics 109-96. Aldridge managed 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Sullinger dropped 26 and eight boards.
9. In a game filled with stellar individual performances, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves by a count of 117-113. Kenneth Faried, J.J. Hickson and Ty Lawson all registered double-doubles for Denver, while Kevin Love, Kevin Martin and J.J. Barea each topped 20 points for the T-Wolves.
Ricky Rubio added 12 assists despite failing to score a single point.
10. The Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 89-86. The Lakers are now 4-7 for the first time since 2002-03. L.A. won 50 games that year.
Bonus Fact: The Sacramento Kings set a Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd noise at an indoor arena with a mark of 124.9 decibels. Later in the game, the Kings set yet another record at 126.
