We witnessed two world class blowouts yesterday, as the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz were no match for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder respectively. The tightest game featured the visiting Suns ousting a determined Orlando Magic. The Pistons had too much talent for the Nets to handle, and the Kings’ lack of outside shooting doomed them against the Lakers. Tonight, there are nine games on the NBA schedule. Here is today’s Fantasy Spin.
Top Fantasy Performers
1) Chris Paul/LAC. Didn’t play in the fourth quarter as the Clippers had already blown the doors wide open. 6 of 10 FGA, 3 of 4 FTA, 1 rebound, 17 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 TO, 16 points.
2) Joe Johnson/BKN. One of the few bright spots for the Nets yesterday. 12 of 18 FGA, 2 of 3 FTA, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, 0 TO, 34 points.
3) Rodney Stuckey/DET. Instant offense off the bench. 10 of 16 FGA, 7 of 8 FTA, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 TO, 27 points.
4) Goran Dragic/PHO. Getting into a nice groove. 10 of 17 FGA, 1 of 2 FTA, 1 rebound, 13 assists, 0 TO, 23 points.
5) Blake Griffin/LAC. Like Paul, left early due to blowout conditions. 6 of 10 FGA, 3 of 4 FTA, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 2 TO, 15 points.
Honorable mention: Serge Ibaka/OKC
Top Sleepers
1) Darren Collison/LAC. Garbage time hero. 4 of 6 FGA, 6 of 6 FTA, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 TO, 14 points.
2) Andrew Nicholson/ORL. 5 of 8 FGA, 6 of 6 FTA, 8 rebounds, 0 TO, 19 points.
3) Gerald Green/PHO. Getting more comfortable starting. 8 of 15 FGA, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 TO, 20 points.
4) Jared Dudley/LAC. He rarely fills the statsheet. 8 of 10 FGA, 1 of 1 FTA, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 21 points.
5) Rudy Gobert/UTA. My favorite garbage time center. 3 of 3 FGA, 4 of 9 FTA, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 0 TO, 10 points.
Biggest Busts
1) Gordon Hayward/UTA. Undoubtedly playing through an injury. 2 of 9 FGA, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 6 TO, 5 points.
2) DeAndre Jordan/LAC. Not a good matchup for him and he wasn’t needed. 1 of 1 FGA, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 TO, 2 points.
3) Enes Kanter/UTA. Relegated to backup, now being pushed by Gobert. 3 of 5 FGA, 4 of 8 FTA, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 4 TO, 10 points.
4) Andre Drummond/DET. Played second fiddle to Greg Monroe/DET yesterday. 4 of 6 FGA, 1 of 4 FTA, 10 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 TO, 9 points.
5) Derrick Favors/UTA. Not a single Jazz regular had a good game. 3 of 7 FGA, 2 of 4 FTA, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 TO, 8 points.
I cashed comfortably in my early-bird $22 double-up league. But the icing on my cake at DraftStreet was my entry in the evening $2 multi-entry GPP. That league did not fill up and the participants enjoyed a rare chance to bask in free money via overlay. It turned out that Goran Dragic/PHO, Gerald Green/PHO and Reggie Jackson/OKC were inspired choices. They led my team to a two-way tie for second place only 0.50 DraftStreet points behind the winner, good for a shared cash of $107.50 on a $2 investment. One more Steve Blake/LAL assist or one less Pau Gasol/LAL rebound would have propelled my team into a tie for first.
Monday NBA contests at DraftStreet
Draftstreet has a lot more than your run-of-the-mill offerings as far as the NBA is concerned tonight. There are a couple of cheap Survivor leagues starting up after the format debuted last week. There is a juicy $22/500 entry GPP with a total prize pool of $10,000 and a first place prize of $2000. If you like large fields, the standard $2 GPP has expanded to 1,100 max entries. Of course there is also a wide variety of other multi-entry and double-up contests, all with guaranteed prize pools.
Conference Leaders Pacers, Spurs at Home
A look at today’s games from a daily fantasy perspective. Dollar figures are DraftStreet prices. An asterisk (*) indicates that the team is playing the second of back-to-back games.
Boston Celtics at Charlotte Bobcats (7:00pm EST)- Over/Under Total=185.5; Bobcats -4
This one looks relatively even on paper, with the Celtics coming off an impressive win over the Hawks as the slight favorites. Jordan Crawford/BOS is a decent play.
Minnesota Timberwolves at Indiana Pacers(7:00pm EST)- Over/Under Total=193; Pacers -7
I like Minnesota’s chances for the upset. They’re very difficult to blowout and the interior duo of Kevin Love/MIN and Nikola Pekovic/MIN are tough to match up against. If only Ricky Rubio/MIN could learn how to shoot. For the Pacers, Lance Stephenson/IND remains a speculative play par excellence, as he tends to either have solid stat lines or explode.
Milwaukee Bucks at Detroit Pistons* (7:30pm EST)- Over/Under Total=190.5; Pistons -7.5
We’ll see how the Bucks regulars respond to the mass benching. The Pistons have a significant edge in talent, even if their point guard Brandon Jennings/DET isn’t in form yet.
Phoenix Suns* at Miami Heat (7:30pm EST)- Over/Under Total=200; Heat -11.5
Goran Dragic/PHO will have to be at his very best for the Suns to hang with the Heat. I suspect the Heat will pull away in the second half.
Houston Rockets at Memphis Grizzlies (8:00pm EST)- Over/Under Total=195; Rockets -1.5
The Rockets have plenty of depth to fill in for the injured James Harden/HOU. With the Grizzles missing their main man Marc Gasol/MEM, the Rockets should win it comfortably.
Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks (8:30pm EST)- Over/Under Total=212; Mavericks -5.5
A rematch that figures to be another shootout. Dirk Nowitzki/DAL, Monta Ellis/DAL and Jose Calderon/DAL are all solid choices. Ty Lawson/DEN has great monster game potential.
New Orleans Pelicans at San Antonio Spurs (8:30pm EST)- Over/Under Total=199.5; Spurs -10
San Antonio has enough solid frontcourt players to neutralize Anthony Davis/NOP. The Pelicans can stay in this one if they get hot perimeter shooting, especially from Ryan Anderson/NOP.
Chicago Bulls* at Utah Jazz* (7:00pm EST)- Over/Under Total=;
Two teams reeling from blowouts meet up in Utah. The Bulls should carry the day, based on their interior strength. Neither team has been shooting well from the outside. Luol Deng/CHI is set up for a productive game.
New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers (10:00pm EST)- Over/Under Total=194.5; Blazers -8
Though I expect another great effort from Carmelo Anthony/NYK, the Trail Blazers as currently constructed are very tough to beat. LaMarcus Aldridge/POR will not approach the number of his last game, but will do well. Damian Lillard/POR is my dark horse candidate to have a monster game.
My recommended lineup in today’s $2/110-entry Double-Up at DraftStreet (subject to change; $99.654 of $100,000 spent):
Stars Worth Starting: LaMarcus Aldridge/POR, Dirk Nowitzki/DAL
Bargain Plays: Rodney Stuckey/DET, Lance Stephenson/IND
Speculative Plays: Luol Deng/CHI, Terrence Jones/HOU, Robin Lopez/POR
Notes: Monta Ellis/DAL is also a good choice here. Deng/CHI gets minutes and the slow Jazz defense should be to his liking. Terrence Jones/HOU became more active offensively with Harden/HOU missing last game, and I expect more of the same. Aldridge/POR is a nightmare matchup for most of the centers around the league.
Estimated DraftStreet points: 220.00 (+/- 30.00)
