It’s a new month in the NBA, but the stellar results haven’t changed. A superstar joined Michael Jordan in the record books, and a rising force played his way into the company of Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon.
Here’s everything you need to know about what transpired in the NBA on the first day of December.
1. Kevin Durant destroyed the Minnesota Timberwolves for 32 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four steals as the Oklahoma City Thunder earned a 113-103 win. Durant is the first player to put up at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and four blocks in one game since Michael Jordan on January 16, 1988.
Jordan had 36 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and four blocks in that legendary game.
2. Andre Drummond of the Detroit Pistons put up 31 points, 19 rebounds, six steals and two blocks on 12-of-15 shooting from the field and 7-of-18 from the free throw line during a 115-100 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Drummond is the first player since Hakeem Olajuwon on Nov. 27, 1990 to tally at least 30 points, 19 rebounds and six steals in one game.
Drummond also joins Charles Barkley as the only player to ever finish with at least 30 points, 18 rebounds and five steals while shooting at least 80.0 percent from the field.
3. The Indiana Pacers became the first team since the 2002-03 Dallas Mavericks to start a season at 16-1. David West had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Paul George scored 27 to lead the Pacers past the Los Angeles Clippers 105-100.
For what it’s worth, Dallas finished the 2002-03 season at 60-22 and reached the Western Conference Finals.
4. Two players are tied for second in the NBA with 15 double-doubles, and both play for the Clippers. Chris Paul put up 17 points and 10 assists and Blake Griffin had 16 points and 12 rebounds to reach that mark.
5. As Minnesota lost to Oklahoma City, Kevin Love extended his league-lead in double-doubles by finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds on 4-of-14 shooting. He has 18 double-doubles in 19 games.
6. In the Sixers’ loss to Detroit loss, Evan Turner registered 20 points for the 14th time in 17 games this season. In 2012-13, Turner put up at least 20 in 17 out of 82 games played.
7. The Splash Bros were at their finest as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Sacramento Kings 115-100. Stephen Curry had 36 points, 10 assists and three steals on 14-of-24 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from three-point range. Klay Thompson added 28 points and three steals on 8-of-11 shooting from three-point range.
8. Nate Robinson of the Denver Nuggets and Rudy Gay of the Toronto Raptors both scored 23 points. Robinson was 9-of-14 from the field, while Gay was 10-of-23. It’s no coincidence that the Nuggets defeated the Raptors 112-98.
9. Rookie shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a career-high 21 points, but the New York Knicks fell 103-99 to the New Orleans Pelicans. New York is now 3-13 overall and 1-7 at home. It’s lost seven straight at Madison Square Garden and nine in a row overall.
That home losing streak matches the worst stretch in team history. The 9-game slide is the Knicks’ worst since 2006. This is New York’s worst overall start to a season since 2009-10.
10. Anthony Davis fractured his hand during the Pelicans’ win over the Knicks.
Bonus Fact: The Portland Trail Blazers blew two leads of at least 19 points, but still held on to win 114-108 over the Los Angeles Lakers. Portland is now 13-3.
Bonus Fact: Xavier Henry scored a career-high 27 points during the Lakers’ loss.
