Who said the 2013 NBA draft class wasn’t special?
Well, one of our guys did, but what does he know?
Tuesday, December 3 was highlighted by a number of different games that will hold a special place in league history. From a double-overtime clash that featured an NBA first to an improbable 27-point comeback, there were feats that simply cannot go unnoticed.
Here’s everything that you need to know about what transpired.
1. For the first time in NBA history, two rookies recorded a triple-double in the same game. Michael Carter-Williams finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals for the Philadelphia 76ers while Victor Oladipo poured in 26 points, 10 boards, 10 dimes and three swipes for Orlando.
Carter-Williams and Oladipo are also the first two rookies to record a triple-double this season.
2. That’s not the only thing you need to know about this game for the ages. Arron Afflalo scored a career-high 43 points and Glen Davis dropped a season-high 33 for the Magic. For Philadelphia, Thaddeus Young finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds and Evan Turner scored 24 while shooting 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Philadelphia defeated Orlando 126-125 in double overtime.
3. The Golden State Warriors overcame a 27-point deficit to earn a 112-103 win over the Toronto Raptors. The Warriors were 10-of-20 from 3-point range during the final 21 minutes, 19 seconds. The Raptors went 10-of-28 from the field in that same span.
4. The league leader in fourth-quarter scoring is Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings. He showed why when he singlehandedly outscored the Oklahoma City Thunder 21-19 during the fourth quarter of the Kings’ 97-95 loss.
Thomas finished with 24 points and four steals, and is now averaging 17.4 points this season.
5. How weird was Sacramento’s loss? Very weird.
The Kings made three more 3-pointers, grabbed three more offensive rebounds, dished out three more assists and committed seven less turnovers than the Thunder. They made just one field goal and three free throws less than OKC.
Even still, the Kings managed to lose. What else is new?
6. Despite receiving 23 points from Michael Beasley, the Miami Heat lost 107-97 to the Detroit Pistons. Seven Pistons scored in double figures, including Andre Drummond, who finished with 10 points and 18 rebounds for his 13th double-double, which leads the Eastern Conference.
It was Detroit’s first road victory over Miami during the Big Three era.
7. Third-year power forward Jon Leuer posted career-high marks of 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to lead the Memphis Grizzlies past the Phoenix Suns, 110-91. Fellow young power forward Ed Davis put up 21 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, and Mike Conley had 18 points and 14 assists.
Memphis is now 9-8 overall and 4-5 at home.
8. Timofey Mozgov put up 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 111-87 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Denver has won seven straight games.
9. The Nets fell to 5-13. That’s the same record that they had after 18 games in 2011-12, when the then New Jersey Nets finished 22-44.
10. Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and Monta Ellis put up 22 as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Charlotte Bobcats, 89-82. Dallas is 11-8 overall, 9-2 at home, and 4-4 when both Nowitzki and Ellis score at least 20 points.
Bonus Fact: By making six 3-pointers last night, Klay Thompson has 14 three-balls during his past two games.
