The NBA action on Wednesday, December 11 had it all. There were Hall of Fame-caliber milestones, game-winning buzzer-beaters and a legendary head coach returned to the city that he brought championship success.
Here’s everything you need to know about last night’s action.
1. Antawn Jamison became the 39th player in NBA history to score at least 20,000 points. Jamison is also one of 20 players to record at least 20,000, 8,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists. The only players who have achieved the feat without reaching the Hall of Fame are Jamison, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Shaquille O’Neal.
Duncan, Garnett and O’Neal are headed for the Hall of Fame. Is Jamison? Hit the comments section to let us know.
2. Doc Rivers returned to the TD Garden by leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a 96-88 win over the Boston Celtics. Jeff Green scored 29 points against his former mentor, but Chris Paul countered with 22 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and two steals. Jamal Crawford added 21 points of his own.
Los Angeles is 14-8. Boston is 10-13 in its first year of the post-Rivers era.
3. The Orlando Magic ended the NBA’s longest active losing streak—six games—with a 92-83 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Glen Davis had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson added 17, seven boards, six assists, one block and a steal.
4. The New York Knicks blew a 23-point lead, but still managed to hold on for an 83-78 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Carmelo Anthony finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Amar’e Stoudemire added 14 points and nine boards in 30 minutes to lead the Knicks.
Anthony has 11 double-doubles in 2013-14. He finished with 10 in 2012-13.
5. On top of setting a new double-double standard for himself, ‘Melo has entered the ranks of history. Anthony has led the Knicks in scoring in all 21 games this season, which is the longest streak in 30 years.
Unfortunately, the Knicks have gone 6-15 in that time.
6. Tim Duncan posted 21 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and two blocks to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 109-77 road win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Jeff Ayres added a season-high 10 rebounds and Tony Parker put up 15 points and five assists in just 21 minutes played.
Most impressively: Duncan posted those monster numbers in 24 minutes. He sat out the entire fourth quarter.
7. The upside that Sam Presti has committed to was flashed on Wednesday, December 11. Russell Westbrook scored 27 points, Kevin Durant and Jeremy Lamb posted 18, Reggie Jackson had 17, and Serge Ibaka put up 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
The Oklahoma City Thunder proceeded to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 116-100. Memphis was without Tony Allen and Marc Gasol, but this was impressive, nonetheless.
8. Jason Smith posted season-high marks of 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a narrow 111-106 win over the Detroit Pistons. Davis already has more double-doubles in 2013-14 than he did in 2012-13.
As a team, New Orleans is 10-10. That’s the Pelicans’ best start since CP3’s departure.
9. Kevin Love posted 26 points and 15 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 106-99. Love is in sole possession of the league-lead with 20 double-doubles in 21 games.
10. The Golden State Warriors stormed back from 18 points down to defeat the Dallas Mavericks 95-93. Stephen Curry scored 33 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals. He also drained the game-winning jump shot with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Curry is averaging 30.0 points, 9.8 assists and 2.2 steals during the month of December.
Bonus Fact: Nate Wolters, a second-round draft choice in 2013, posted a career-high 18 points, seven assists and two steals for the Bucks. Wolters leads the Bucks with 4.3 assists in 24.6 minutes per game. It’s early, but Wolters is looking like a steal.
