Saturday, December 14 was a night in which the NBA hosted eight games featuring some of the most high-profile players in the league. There were legendary milestones, out-of-this-world performances and a loss that continued the Eastern Conference’s dreadful season.
Here’s everything that you need to know about last night’s games.
1. Exactly one week after Tim Duncan achieved the feat, Miami Heat shooting guard Ray Allen joined the 24,000-point club. Allen is the 22nd player in NBA history to reach 24,000 points, and the sixth active player to achieve the feat. The others are Kobe Bryant, Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce.
Allen finished with 12 points in a 114-107 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
2. For just the second time this season, all three members of Miami’s Big Three scored at least 20 points. LeBron James led the way with 25 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals on 9-of-12 shooting. Dwyane Wade poured in 24 on a mark of 9-of-15, and Chris Bosh added 22 points and 12 rebounds.
It was Bosh’s first double-double since October 30.
3. Chris Paul put on one of the best performances we’ll see all year to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 113-97 win over the Washington Wizards. CP3 tallied 38 points, 12 assists, three rebounds and three steals to just two turnovers on 11-of-14 shooting from the field, 5-of-7 from three-point range and 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Paul became the ninth player since 1985 to score at least 38 points on 14 field goal attempts or less. None of the other eight did it with as few free throw attempts as CP3.
4. One night after posting just four points and 13 assists, Kobe Bryant responded with 21 points, eight dimes and seven rebounds on 8-of-15 shooting from the field to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to an 88-85 road win over the Charlotte Bobcats.
Kemba Walker continued his All-Star campaign for Charlotte by posting 24 points and eight assists on 10-of-13 shooting from the field.
5. Carmelo Anthony scored 35 points on 13-of-22 shooting, and Andrea Bargnani put up 23 on 11-of-16 shooting to lead the New York Knicks past the Atlanta Hawks 111-106. In defeat, Lou Williams scored a season-high 27 points in his 11th game back from surgery on a torn ACL.
With Atlanta’s loss, there are just two teams in the Eastern Conference with a record of .500 or better.
6. The Portland Trail Blazers continued to silence the critics with an astonishing 139-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Eight Trail Blazers scored in double-figures. Portland set a franchise record with 21 3-point field goals made and tallied 41 assists—its highest mark since 1990.
LaMarcus Aldridge continued his MVP campaign with 20 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, one block and a steal on 10-of-15 shooting.
7. With the win, Portland moves to a Western Conference best 20-4. That’s the storied organization’s best start since 1990-91. For what it’s worth, Portland won 63 games and reached the Western Conference Finals during that season.
8. Jonas Valanciunas stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and a steal to lead the Toronto Raptors to a 99-77 win over the Chicago Bulls. Kyle Lowry posted team-high marks of 16 points and six assists in the face of trade rumors. For Chicago, Luol Deng scored a game-high 17 and Joakim Noah tallied 10 points, 12 boards, four assists, two blocks and a steal.
Toronto moves to 3-1 since trading Rudy Gay and 9-13 overall.
9. Brandan Wright scored 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting and Jose Calderon dropped 18 on four 3-point field goals as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 106-93 in a rare game without both Dirk Nowitzki and Rick Carlisle. Dirk and Carlisle were out due to an undisclosed illness.
Dallas played without its head coach and leading scorer, and Monta Ellis scored just seven points. Even still, the Mavericks won in a more lopsided fashion than the scoreboard suggests.
10. Tim Duncan posted 22 points and 12 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Utah Jazz 100-84. Duncan has four double-doubles through six games in December after registering just one during his previous 15 outings.
Utah’s rookie point guard Trey Burke scored 20 points in defeat.
Bonus Fact: Chris Paul earned his respect, but John Wall held his own against the NBA’s elite point guard. Wall finished with 24 points, 12 assists, three rebounds and a steal on 10-of-16 shooting.
