Friday, January 3, 2014 was a devastating evening in the NBA. An All-NBA point guard suffered a severe injury and a former Most Improved Player of the Year award-winner hit the hardwood with a scary impact.
Here’s everything that you need to know about last night’s action.
1. The NBA was dealt a major blow when Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul suffered a separated shoulder. After Los Angeles’ 119-112 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, head coach Doc Rivers stated that CP3 is expected to miss 3-to-5 weeks.
Paul had 19 points and six assists in 22 minutes at the time of his injury.
2. CP3’s injury stole the headlines, but DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin dominated the stat sheet. Jordan scored a career-high 25 points and added 18 rebounds, three blocks and a steal on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Griffin tallied 25 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and a block.
As for Paul’s replacement, Darren Collison tallied a season-high 20 points.
3. The Toronto Raptors became the fourth team in the Eastern Conference to earn a record better than .500 with a 101-88 win over the Washington Wizards. Kyle Lowry posted 19 points and 11 assists, and Patrick Patterson finished with 18 points—his highest total since joining the Raptors.
Toronto has won five straight games and is 16-15.
4. The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Utah Jazz 110-99. Pau Gasol erupted for his biggest game of the year with 23 points and season-high marks of 17 rebounds and eight assists with three blocks.
The story of the game: Kendall Marshall dropped career-high marks of 20 points, 15 assists and six rebounds in his first start for the Lakers.
5. David Lee scored 23 points, Stephen Curry posted 22 and Klay Thompson found the bottom of the net for 21 as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Atlanta Hawks 101-100. The Warriors overcame 21 turnovers to continue their winning ways.
Golden State has won eight straight games. It’s the first time the Warriors have won at least eight straight games since 2005.
Bonus Fact: For the first time this season, Carmelo Anthony didn’t lead the New York Knicks in scoring during a game he played. New York fell 102-100 to the Houston Rockets.
Bonus Fact: In a very scary moment, New Orleans Pelicans power forward Ryan Anderson was taken off of the floor on a stretcher after suffering an apparent spine injury. The Pelicans held on for the 95-92 win over the Boston Celtics, but all minds were set on Anderson’s health.
