March is about underdogs. That’s why we love it so much. Well, most of us anyway. (Can someone check Chris Bernucca for a pulse?) Just kidding, boss. It’s the incredible stories like Mercer’s upset of Duke, Dayton’s run to the Sweet 16 and Stephen F. Austin’s miraculous comeback against VCU that keep us glued to the TV screen in March, like a month-long Rob Ford press conference. There’s nothing like a good underdog narrative, and year after year, the NCAA Tournament delivers with several

Scott Odom: The Incredible Story of Professional Basketball’s First One-Legged Player
What’s holding you back from pursuing your dream? Is it the fear of the unknown? The overwhelming weight of expectation? The harsh reality that failure is an option? For Scott Odom, the answer is as simple as it is complex: nothing. Not cancer. Not depression. Not a snub from the NBA and one of its most prominent owners. Not the jealousy of teammates. Not even the loss of his right leg. [Read more…]
Gonzo on NCAAs: Who Is The Next Brad Stevens?
From the time I first saw Chuck Daly, Pat Riley and my all-time favorite, Larry Brown, who used to wear the cool sport coats with the patches on the elbow, roaming the sidelines coaching in the NBA, I aspired to someday be an NBA head coach. Because I read about the great Moses Malone putting a note in the Bible, wanting to be a great NBA player someday, I decided at age 11 to do the same thing. Somehow, I didn’t
10 Fast Facts from Last Night’s Games — Spurs Win 14th Straight, Sixers Lose Again, LeBron Hits Game-Winner
With a temporary break from the NCAA Tournament, the NBA provided some March Madness of its own. A fourth team reached 50 wins, a surprising player erupted for a season-high scoring total and a pleasant surprise continued to establish new success. Furthermore, a superstar sank a game-winner, a championship contender remained red-hot and a struggling squad continued to re-define inferiority. Here’s everything that you need to know about last night’s action. [Read more…]
Tweet of the Day: NBA Prospect Joel Embiid Contemplates Kansas’ Loss
The South Region No. 2 Seed Kansas Jayhawks suffered a frustrating loss at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 57-60. The Rock Chalk, Jayhawk faithful were disappointed to witness star freshman Andrew Wiggins fall short of expectations. Hoisting a mere six shots and making only one, he finished the contest with a dismal four points. The Stanford Cardinal out-rebounded Kansas 37-35, which may not be terrible, however they also outscored the Jayhawks 30-20

In just two days, the biggest individual DraftStreet NBA contest since Christmas Day takes place. VIDEO: Did bad loss to Cavs doom Knicks? Who gets West’s eighth seed? Beware the Grizzlies
Sunday night’s self-destruction against the Cavs was about as bad of a loss as the Knicks could have imagined, given that they had a chance to pull within two games of the Atlanta Hawks, who had lost earlier in the day. Well, to be fair, it wasn’t totally a self-destruction. Jarrett Jack was phenomenal for Cleveland on offense, repeatedly burning Raymond Felton, and Luol Deng did a terrific job on Carmelo Anthony, keeping the ball out of the NBA’s second-leading scorer
Bernucca: You Can Have the NCAA Tournament
I don’t like the NCAA Tournament. I don’t like that college basketball’s regular season provides little postseason incentive. I don’t like that the coach is a bigger personality than the players. I don’t like that the games are played on neutral courts. I don’t like that one bad game or bad call or bad break can end a team’s season. I don’t like that “close” becomes a synonym for “well-played.” And I don’t like that poor play determines the outcome much
