If there were another way to begin this article, I’d do it. But there isn’t.
The Charlotte Bobcats are in the playoffs.
That phrase alone is enough to tell you that Saturday, April 5 was an extraordinary day in the NBA. A rising star set a new career-high in scoring, an embattled franchise made it to the playoffs and a pair of rookies achieved career firsts.
Here’s everything that you need to know about last night’s action.
1. Al Jefferson posted 24 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal to lead the Charlotte Bobcats to a 96-94 overtime win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kemba Walker added 20 points while just two players scored in double-figures for the Cavaliers.
With its win, Charlotte clinched a postseason berth for the first time since 2009-10 and just the second time in franchise history.
2. The Cavaliers lost, but star point guard Kyrie Irving scored a career-high 44 points. Silver lining.
3. No. 4 overall draft choice Cody Zeller recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. It took him 77 games to do it.
4. Making a rare start in Kyle Lowry’s place at point guard, Greivis Vasquez scored a season-high 26 points to lead the Toronto Raptors to a 102-98 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. DeMar DeRozan added 23 as Toronto overcame 19 points and 12 rebounds from the red-hot Jeff Adrien.
At 21-18 away from home, the Raptors clinched their first winning road record in franchise history.
5. Greg Monroe, Brandon Jennings and Andre Drummond stepped up to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 115=111 comeback win over the Boston Celtics. Monroe scored 21 points, Jennings had 20 and Drummond put up 19 points, 20 rebounds and a block as Detroit erased a 19-point second-half deficit to win by four.
The loss stings for Boston, but rookie point guard Phil Pressey served as a beacon of hope by recording his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 assists.
6. Five separate players scored at least 14 points for the Orlando Magic, which claimed a 100-92 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kyle O’Quinn posted 14 points and 12 rebounds and Arron Afflalo scored a game-high 18 points as the Magic spoiled Minnesota’s postseason dreams.
The T-Wolves have been eliminated from playoff contention for the 10th consecutive season. That’s the worst streak in the NBA.
7. Ricky Rubio was a bright spot for Minnesota, posting 18 points, 10 assists and three steals in 33 minutes. It was Rubio’s career-best 14th double-double.
Rubio had 12 in 2011-12, 13 in 2012-13 and is at 14 in 2013-14.
8. Deron Williams recorded 19 points and nine assists to lead the Brooklyn Nets to a 105-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Kevin Garnett played for the first time since February 27 and recorded 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 13 minutes.
With the win, the Nets secured a winning record for the second consecutive season. It’s the first time that’s happened since 2005-06.
9. The 76ers have lost 60 games for the first time since 1996-97.
10. Joakim Noah recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 96-78 road decimation of the Washington Wizards. D.J. Augustin posted 25 points to continue what has been a breakout season for the former lottery pick.
The Bulls extend their winning streak to an NBA-best five straight games.
Bonus Fact: Road teams won four of six.
