Terrible officiating, an upset by a road team and All-Star perimeter players putting on standout performances. What else did you expect?
Tuesday, April 22 was an example of the 2014 NBA Playoffs staying true to form. The upsets continued to pour in and the stars continued to be placed under a spotlight. Some persevered. Some didn’t.
Here’s everything that you need to know about last night’s action.
1. Paul George stepped up with 27 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, four steals and a block as the Indiana Pacers used a dominant second-half to defeat the Atlanta Hawks 101-85. Luis Scola added 20 points and George Hill scored 15 on 5-of-8 shooting to help Indiana discover some offense.
Scola’s 20 points were quite improbable. He only had one 20-point performance during the entire 2013-14 regular season.
2. George’s 27 points came on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor. It’s the first time he’s shot 50.0 percent or better from the field since March 14.
3. DeMar DeRozan bounced back from a dreadful Game 1 with 30 points as the Toronto Raptors stepped up to take a 100-95 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Joe Johnson scored 18 for the Nets, but Brooklyn had no answer for Toronto’s balanced attack with six players scoring in double-digits.
DeRozan joins Chris Bosh, Vince Carter and Antonio Davis as the only players in franchise history to score at least 30 points in a playoff game.
4. Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points and 14 rebounds. He had 17 points and 18 boards in Game 1. He’s the first player with at least 30 points and 30 rebounds in his first two playoff games since Ralph Sampson and Sam Perkins in 1985.
5. Bradley Beal scored a postseason career-high 26 points as the Washington Wizards upset the Chicago Bulls 101-98 in overtime. Nene Hilario added 17 points and John Wall scored 16 for Washington, while D.J. Augustin had 25, Taj Gibson scored 22 with 10 rebounds and Joakim Noah tallied 20 points and 12 boards.
Chicago has lost five consecutive playoff games, which falls one short of a franchise record.
Bonus Fact: Dating back to the regular season, Washington has won six straight games. It hasn’t won seven straight since January of 2005.
